[laughter] james: you seem modest and controlled in your personality. aren't you used to ceos who are throwing things? james: i think if you are the 7th of 12 children, you don't want to be the thrower. that is not going to end so well. no, i think part of it is honestly just personality and a probably helps shape you. your family obviously does. but i think these businesses have been on a 30-year transition from very tightly held private partnerships where frankly, more extreme the personal behavior, taking more risk because it's your own money, etc., etc., was par for the course. versus now, these are big global corporations. we are relatively small among the big ban

david: you never turned him down for a deal? james: david: i person have not.:have you seen him since he was president? james: i have not. david: you have any advice that you would like to give him or he doesn't need any advice from you? james: he has a large team of advisers and people who want to be advisers. i don't think there is a shortage of advisors is a problem. somebody once said to me the office of the president of the united states, it consumes people. gender,e favorable to but at the same time, the world is not staying static. we have in or miss geopolitical uncertainty, issues around north korea, iran, the immigration crisis in syria. pockets of lot of the world that could easily and gulf and consume the time of the president, so i think it is critical that they be very focused on a small number of achievable goals and that the team is very coordinated, delivered -- a deliberate and cooperative and working to get those done. have: the strategy you employed as ceo, and i think the market capitalization century have been ceo is up 110%, so i hope you

david: and where were you? gen.raeus: we were in baghdad, which is where we were told we would be going, and then we were told to go to muscle -- go up to mosul because it is out of control. a small unit and 17 civilians killed responding to a riot. within about 36 hours, we did one of the biggest air assaults in history. , weome also, -- up to mosul had 250 helicopters or so. we blanketed the city with our soldiers, literally pushing right into the city, calmed it down, stop the looting and the rest of it, and gradually took control of it. and we had an interim government up there within two weeks of arriving. david: you may remember early , on, it was thought that shock and awe would be all that is necessary. that a lot of missiles going off would be the end of the war. that did not work. gen. petraeus: we imposed a bit there, but itd did not not work. we had casualties and lost heavy equipment, and when president bush decided to invade iraq, -- david: when president bush decided to invade iraq, part of it was the

david: good evening. i'm david asman in for charles payne. you are watching "making money." stocks surging as president trump gets set to outline his tax plan tomorrow. treasury secretary steve mnuchin and other officials are meeting on capitol hill to discuss the plan with legislators. adam? reporter: that's a very important meeting taking place on capitol hill. you will see gary cohn, the economic advisor to the president, and they are neating with the key players who will have to take the president's concept and mix it with whatever the republican leadership on capitol hill has in mind and come up with the legislation. tomorrow we'll get that broad kind of outline. who are they meeting with right now? kevin brady, orrin hatch, paul ryan, and senate reader mitch mcconnell because there is not a total unified front. one of the issues that's a problem for both sides is the president wants what he calls a massive tax break for le class americans and business taxes, a corporate tax rate of 15%. that some republicans worry would contribute to greater deficits and greater debt f

david: so today, how do you spend your time?rcentage of your time to meet clients and prospective clients, 10%, 15%? james: it changes. each year i sit down and write the 10 things i want to get done that year, and in the early years in the job, they were very much problem issues. i don't know if you remember, but we owned a half built casino in atlantic city. we wrote that off. a lot of things needed to get resolved. happily as time has gone on, they are resolved, and i am spending much, much more time on client activity. a much larger part of the job now is trying to help our teams do what we are supposed to, why we come to work every day, help our clients. david: how much time do you spend rallying the troops? james: we have our new managing director dinner, which we have all 142 new managing director's this year, and thousands of partners, and i will be speaking to them right after this, so every day i tried to do something that connects to a group of employees, whether it is summer interns or senior managing directors. davi

david: not enough. ♪ ♪ david: you have been the c.e.o.an 10 years, and most ceos of fortune 500 companies are probably for five years or so. so you have done very well. the stock is up 67% since you have been the c.e.o. is it harder to be a c.e.o. now than it was 10 years ago? indra: i think when you look at the world the last decade, the financial crisis in fact changed the world enormously, because you have had since then, really the world has not recovered from the financial crisis. you have had geopolitical upheavals all across the world. in addition, technology disruption is rewriting the rules. what kinds of jobs will you keep in the company? how are you going to digitize your value chain? how will e-commerce impact the business? there is some technology impacting every part of the company. so in the last seven years in particular, it has been a real challenge to run a large company because you have got to be a foreign-policy expert. you have to be a technology person. you have got to be on the front line. you have to talk to world

>> yes, david. that's why if you look at the public opinion polls in how they rate climate change in terms of their worries, barely gets a bump of an asterisk outside of hollywood. the reason is they've been exaggerated. carbon dioxide, they're right, we couldn't live without the stuff. and unnecessarily against oil, gas and coal, it's a moral outrage. an and when they remove the restrictions, they'll rise up again. david: bruce, does that concern you? that we may get an up tick in carbon dioxide. >> cities, states, trump's executive order, maybe there were his hysterics, but he says outlandish things, he would not predict how many coal jobs would be created. i'm guessing it's going to be zero. david: the point we made at the beginning, mike, the market forces are moving in at that direction, we're burning much cleaner coal than we used to, the market forces are having a much more powerful input on cleaning our environment than regulations ever could? >> i think, david, people need to be reminded of

david?id: we were discussing with kevin cirilli, senators debating the nominee neil gorsuch for supreme court justice. let's go to were reported from washington. what's happening on capitol hill right now, a lot of wrangling of ,ho will vote for and against which could lead to a nuclear option. what is the nuclear option? >> it effectively changes the rules with a simple majority. most things in the senate require 60 votes. if you change the rules with a bare majority, pretty soon the senate might not look like the senate much longer. a lot of senators on both sides of the aisle are worried that one the nuclear option this week to eliminate that 60 vote threshold for judge gorsuch to get on the supreme court could lead down the line to pulling the nuclear option for legislation, suddenly all kinds of things could be a lot easier to accomplish. everything from repealing republicans, to instituting medicare for all -- liberal parties once democrats are back in charge. hugecould have ramificati

david: right, absolutely. but you mentioned the question of modernization, and that is something i think is very interesting. the united states is now, the obama administration spoke about spending $1 trillion to modernize american nuclear weapons. presumably this would involve updating the control systems, the computer systems to make certain they are not vulnerable to hacking from some terrorist or third-party. but that had the same time also could be seen potentially as breathing the numbers of nuclear weapons. so i guess the question is, with these other powers, world nuclear powers, always looking on the fringe -- north korea, iranians, even the saudis or other terrorist groups, they could buy a nuclear device from north korea or pakistan or whatever -- how is that even possible with all of that there to consider a total elimination of nuclear weapons by the major powers? it is open to vulnerability. guillaume: the answer would be multilateral talk. it becomes way more complicated. that is not two days in

david? david: we're going to use that as a segue.ctivists are targeting a tax break that predominantly benefits wealthy people in states. the conservatives want to abolish and democrats want to protect. the dynamic might further complicate bipartisan support for tax reform. we have someone looking at the state and local the duction. what is it, and who does it benefit? >> the state and local tax deduction has been around for a totury and it allows people adopt their state and local income taxes from their federal tax bill. it is a rare example of a tax conservativesitax want to get rid of because their argument is, and benefits high tax states that tend to be democratic, blue states because that itemizeple their deductions to deduct the cost of their state and local taxes. is a big tax break on the table. it cost the government about 1.3 trillion over 10 years. a third of the tax rate goes to a few states together. republicans are looking for ways to raise the revenue and make it neutral. this is many of the things that they will loo
