david: you sold it? >> yes. david: you cashed out, got a lot of money for a young person.id you say i'm going to retire now or just go teach? or just relax, what did you decide to do? >> it was complicated because along the way i had co-founder, co. started a number of other companies. between 1994 and 1990 seven, for other companies i have been the co-founder. each of them went public, three of them got sold. in a way, it was worse than just doing one thing and calling it a day. because i had also sampled doing multiple things and so i did not consider retiring. david: the norm would beat serial entrepreneur, where you start a company, finish it, go onto the next one. you are doing several at the same time. >> 20, 30 years later. david: when did you start raising funds were people could give you money to invest and you would then invest in various biotech ventures? >> since 2000, we have operated a series of funds. some of which has been my capital increasingly so in the larger ones. reason we did it that way was very interesting, our idea was to deploy the funds lucidly

david: you can say the name. chris: i went to duke. david: we shared that. chris: yep. david: after you graduate what had did you do? chris: i went to proctor & gamble. i went into their brand management program at the headquarters in cincinnati. david: and after that? chris: so after that, i went to harvard business school and got my m.b.a. and after that, i went into consulting for a few years. david: but you spent a lot of time in the food world because you were before pepsi you were at -- after pepsi at kraft, is that right? chris: that's right. david: is it something about food that really appealed to you? chris: i would say what i love is being in consumer industries. for me, what i really find sort of energizing is having a tangible product that i can see, touch, feel, etc. and also one that, you know, people can relate to. when i say i work at pepsi or i work at kraft or i work at mcdonald's, immediately you can always have a conversation with people. and the fun thing for me and my current job, no matter where i am in the world, people have an opinion about mcd

david: and how they stay there. you don't feel inadequate now because you are only the second wealthiest man in the world, is that right? he is an incredible entrepreneur, a parallel entrepreneur. he starts many companies at the same time. one of those companies is moderna. a company famous for having created the vaccine that dealt with the coronavirus pandemic. i sat down in boston with him to hear about the success of moderna and what he plans to do in the future in other bio-tech areas. when you came up with the idea of moderna, did you ever in your wildest dreams think it would change the world and the way it has? noubar: absolutely not. what we thought we had was the next generation of biotechnology, and something that had never been dreamt before, which is the body's own ability to make its own drugs, whatever it needed. so the notion would be, we would introduce a molecule that would code for a drug that we want, and the body would translate and make the drug that it needs. that was the basic idea, which was

david: and how they stay there. don't feel inadequate now that you are the second wealthiest man in the world, right? [laughter] one of the most successful investors and entrepreneurs in silicon valley is reid hoffman. as an entrepreneur, he helped build paypal and he started linkedin. as an investor, he has been an early investor in facebook and airbnb and now is a partner in one of the leading venture capital firms in silicon valley. i had a chance to find out what unique qualities it takes to be an investor and entrepreneur in my conversation with reid hoffman. ♪ the venture-capital world today seems like it could never get any better. everybody seems to be making money. the values are high and the returns are very high. can it get any better than this? and are you worried about this being a bubble, not unlike we had the tech bubble busts in 1999 and 2007? reid: you always worry about the market getting stimulated. there is some risk within the general market. that being said, technology is accelerating the trans

david: and after that?that i went to harvard business school and got my mba and after that, went into consulting for a few years. david: but you spent a lot of time in the food world. before pepsi -- or after pepsi, you were at kraft. is that right? chris: that's right. david: so was there something about food that really appealed to you? chris: i would say i love being in consumer industries. for me, what i really find energizing is having a tangible product that i can see, touch, feel, etc. and also one that, you know, people can relate to. when i say, you know, i work at pepsi, or i work at kraft or, i work at mcdonald's, immediately, you can have a conversation with people. the fun thing for me in my current job, no matter where i am in the world, people have an opinion about mcdonald's and want to talk to you about mcdonald's. it makes the job fun. david: you came here in what year? chris: i was here in 2015. david: ok, and then you rose up pretty quickly and became the head of america's. chris: that's

david: do you wear a crash helmet when you are if those cars? reid: i don't. david: ok.t about flying taxis, is that in our future? reid: there is. i helped bring joby public and it has moved the transport grade from 2d to 3d, redefined cities, make commutes much less arduous, being able to live remote and coming to the cities. we are on which to science fact. david: what about space? do you invest in space related investments? reid: not as intensely as some of my friends like elon. i put some money into space x. that is more of elon and his amazing transmission of the world. but it is officially an important area. i ended up in it sometimes just by who i know. ♪ david: let's talk about how he became an investor and entrepreneur. you were going to be an academic, and then on the road to damascus kind of epiphany, you said, i am not going to be an academic, i will be something more important, an investor. is that right? reid: it did not start with investor. it started with product creator. it was, how do we think and speak better? how do we make ourselves better as indivi

: david:.odernamoderna --. david: public companies worry about their shareholders and now they say you should worry about stakeholders and not just shareholders. >> public or private leadership obligation of any leadership that of any leader is shareholders. i am unaware of too many shareholders that technically penalize you for doing that. i think what people do societally is invest in the license to operate and that is a very fickle license because a lot of corporations lose that license to operate. i believe that if you take the employee base, suppliers, environment, every aspect of what makes your ecosystem work. i grew up in a world where everything is nature driven. everything is based off biology. there is ecology around companies. if you lose your ecology, you lose the company. david: some say it is important for ceos to speak out in public issues like voting rights and stuff like that. do you have a view of that something public companies ceos should do or board to do or public compani

david: your frequent flyer version. chris: you got it. david: the last d is dine in. to be a thing that people did, but now, is it a smaller part of your business ? and do you need all the space in all of those restaurants? chris: i think it is still an important part of our business because the memory the people form from mcdonald's come from the dine in experience. but i think you are right in recognizing that it is , certainly through the pandemic a less prevalent part of the , business. i mean our view is it will come , back. i think dining and eating is such a social experience, there is always be an element of it that is in person. now how much of it comes back, , time will tell. and if at some point we need to reduce the space for dine in seating that we have in our restaurants, we can always calibrate and do that. but for now we are in a watch , and see mode. ♪ david: i assume you see people saying that food is not as healthy as they might want it to be. is that the biggest challenge? or just growing the company? chris: ray croc had a famous line that gets quo

david: it is a global company.ow the covid is not behind us, but certainly receding do you expect to travel more? >> i do expect to travel starting next month and you know between now and then that's between now and the end of the year, i have got five international trips lined up. david: when you travel internationally, are you trying to tell local franchisees to work more or do better jobs or what are you trying to do? >> there's a variety of things i'm trying to get done. when i'm out there, the biggest thing is listening. hearing what is on the mind of our franchisees, hearing what is on the minds of our people. that is one thing i'm looking at. the second is making sure that the strategies we are talking about at a corporate level, are they cascading down? a lot of time what can happen is you think you have clarity around what the strategy is what it does not end up being executed. i am looking at the connection between our strategy and is it showing up in the execution of the restaurant? i also will spend tim

david: and how they stay there.ou do not feel inadequate now that you are only the second wealthiest man in the world, right? when angela merkel was looking for someone to head the european central bank, she found christine lagarde. i had a conversation with her about how europe is recovering from the pandemic and the global slowdown in the economy. as we look at the post-covid environment, what would you say is the situation in europe? is europe recovering rapidly? or not as rapidly as you thought? christine: europe is recovering more rapidly than we had anticipated. as a result of that we have significantly upgraded our projections. our projections for this year have been significantly upgraded. 4.6% next year! pre-covid type of growth. this year is going faster than we thought to the point where we will have recovered yo pre-covid -- to pre-covid-19 levels. we had expected it would be early '22 at best. david: are you worried about the delta variant impacting what you have said? christine: it is very closely rela

david: two final questions.uld like to know, what is the pleasure of being the head of the central bank? you obviously have to work seven days a week. you did that for many years in your career. at the imf as well. what is the pleasure you get out of heading the european central bank? ms. lagarde: it is the same kind of pleasure i take in leading other organizations, is making sure that people around me are doing the best they can for the organization, or delivering on their mission, and that we form a team heading in the same direction. so, that, to me, means an awful lot. david: my final question is this. you, in your youth, were a synchronized swimmer, where you have to work closely with teammates and get everything together quite nicely. is it the case that when you do are doing the central banking role, you have to have the same skill set? you have all these central bankers of each country that you have to get to work together. do you think your synchronized swimming skills come to help you as the head of t

david: the u.s. is dominated by a limited number of companies -- google, facebook, apple, microsoft, netflix. i'm sure you are familiar. do you think the u.s. is dominated by too few tech companies and something should be done to weaken their power or is it ok as it is? reid: i think what we are heading to is we are going from five massive tech companies to 10. i thing we are already naturally heading in that direction. you can see it with things like netflix and salesforce and all these companies that continued to grow in strength and create a burette of -- create a br eadth of strong technology companies. when you ask investors, venture capitalists, they are like no, we are having more ability to create amazing new tech companies, so if anything we are already naturally on that trajectory. david: do you think large technology companies in china, alibaba, tencent, baidu, bytedance and so forth can have their technology become dominant in the united states and around the world, and will they continue

david: so you have it here. your book -- this book is interesting in the sense that it came from lectures you gave named after somebody who was an ideological let's say opponent of some of your views. that was justice scalia. were you a friend of his even though you had ideological differences? >> i think so. we would debate those differences. i thought we had a terrific debate. in lubbock, texas, there were several thousands of students. they had never seen the supreme court justice. we talked about our differences. i say, hey, if i had your theory, my goodness, don't you think -- do you think george washington knew about the internet for free speech? and scalia would say, i knew that. then he would say, i'm not saying my theory is perfect. he would say, you know the hunters hunting bears and one is putting his tennis shoes, where are going? he says a bear is coming. you can't outrun a bear. yes, but i can outrun you. that was his view of my way of deciding cases. we -- 28 years now, i have never heard a voice

david: during cova, or you working remotely? were you running the bank from your home or were you going into the office? >> i have spent quite a few weeks stuck in my apartment during the week of covid. the very sizable package put together for monetary policy purposes was engineered around my kitchen table. subsequently, when things were more flexible and we could move out i went to the office a bit. by default, the solution is remote working still today and probably until the end of january and then we will see. david: you should take that kitchen table and move it to your office. obviously, it was right -- it was productive. post-covid, do you expect europeans go back to work at the same levels before in terms of going to work five days a week or will people work four days a week, one day remotely or just four days a week? >> first we should acknowledge that there are people who do not have the luxury of choice. their physical presence is required. you think about hospital staff, construction workers, some people working in s

david: you think it's all performance? he doesn't expect it to end up as an osha mandate businesses have to adhere to? >> the fact that they are using an emergenci' resolution. they aren't even complying with the administrative procedure act because they don't want a period of public commentary with respect to this regulation. he knows if he did it by executive order it would be shot down instantly. the supreme court said in the case involving the eviction moratorium, if the federal government wants to regulate in an area that is traditionally a state regulated area, they have to show that congress has been precise and unambiguous that the federal government can do the action it wants to take. david: a lot of businesses out there, a lot of them are right on the edge with just over a hundred people working for them. they are starting to freak out and say, they don't note legal e legalese you do. they are trying to see if they can afford to pay for the testing, et cetera. are you telling them don't worry about it because it

i'm david muir.evacuations happening right now because of this fire burning in the lucas valley area of marin county. sky seven is live over the scene. firefighters say this is slow to spread right now. slow to moderate pace, fueled by dry grass and trees. this is in unincorporated marin county, putting out a ton of snow. evacuation orders, issued for some areas of lucas valley. so far about 25 people have been evacuated. the fire has burned at least 20 acres right now. no containment. active flames right there. helicopters have been dropping water, making several passes over the head of the fire. as far as putting a lot of smoke open the marin county area, many residents have been telling us they see or smell smoke in their neighborhoods. cornell barnard checks in with us from his home nearby, saying the fire is burning away from houses, but still pretty nerve-racking. >> that is in fact what we sow. you saw the subdivisions, then above that, in the hills above them, you have the fire burning uphill
