[laughter] the most important figure traditionally can monetary policy in the united states is the chairman of the federal reserve board. the current chairman is jay powell. i had a chance to sit down with him and talk about interest rates, inflation and the overall economy. david: there are a few billion people in the world waiting to see what interest rates are going to be doing. do you have any insight on where interest rates might be going? [laughter] chair powell: i'm going to talk the economy and where that leads us with policy. the u.s. economy has performed remarkably well over the last couple of years. 2023, the economy grew well above 3%. the labor market remained very strong. the unappointed rate. inflation came down at a sharp pace particularly in the second , half of the year by a very large amount. that forecast was almost unheard of. it was unheard of before 2023. big upside surp

david: ok.when you go into fomc meeting, the first day, do you pretty much know where you would like to come out at the end of the second day or do you listen to everybody and then make up your mind? chair powell: the way it works is, you know, i talk to the other 18 participants regularly, and i talk to all of them at least once in the 10 days before the meeting. i'm thinking about this 3 or four weeks before the meeting. what should we want to achieve? what data do we need to see? how do we want to change our communications? all those things. i talk to people and i try to put together an answer that has broad support on the committee, and so when we go into the committee on tuesday morning, you know, i'm confident, usually, that i know where this is going to go. you know, things happen. we get data during the meetings sometimes, events happen, but largely you go in knowing what the likely outcome is. that is the design of it. david: so a lot of people in washington, at government agencies, are

david: ok. so when you ask people to do meetings, do they say, "no," or is it hard to get a meeting with investors or not that hard? jay: the answer is no and i'm grateful for that. it is largely because i believe that what kim and i are building is unlike anything else being built in this space. it is a very intentional combination of two complementary skill sets that other firms do not have. david: right now, the private equity world, it's tough to get financing for deals and so forth. are you going to be doing buyouts that require financing or growth capital deals, which don't need as much or any? jay: our strategy is consistent with what i have done in the past, which was unreliant on leverage. in the consumer growth world it's about great execution on value creation plans, not about the amount of leverage that will drive a few basis point of increment of return. in some instances, when the company is can use it, we will use a little bit, but it's about getting behind the right ideas. david:

david: it worked out. kim: it worked out, it made sense. david: you've been exposed to private equity for a little bit of time. you've met investors here and around the world and so forth. what is your view of the private equity investment community? the most honest people you have ever met? kim: very, very nice people. [laughter] i actually have been introduced to the world. a lot of my friends growing up , they are in this space now, so i am in a group chat where i am being asked all the time about different companies and businesses, mostly tech that they invest in. if they are good companies, and i've even gotten on zooms with founders to hear their pitches on their businesses as if i work with them already. so i felt like it would be a good next step to do it together. david: so, jay, how did the two of you first meet, and how did you get into private equity, and why did you specialize in consumer? jay: i started -- well, first of all, david, thank you for having us here. i started my investing career

david: ok. i think i understand. so, to put it in terms i can for sure understand, the markets are suggesting, the futures markets, that there's a 90% chance that the fed will lower its discount rate in september. do you think the markets know what they're talking about? chair powell: so, today i'm not going to be sending any signals one way or the other on any particular meeting. so, just to ruin the fun right at the beginning. i simply -- you know, we're going to make these decisions meeting by meeting, and we're going to make them on the basis of the data as they come in, the evolving data, the evolving outlook, and also the balance of risks now that the two mandates are basically close to being in balance. david: all right. there are some people who say that the fed would not like to lower interest rates in a presidential campaign period because you could be criticized for helping one party or another. do you have any comment on whether that's an accurate view? chair powell: i do. so, our un
