david agus in los angeles. dr. agus, you know there has been a lot of discussion about booster shots. when might you see that happening for people especially 65 and older? >> so, in israel they started doing them in people immune suppressed without a normal immune system. i think we will see those booster shots here in the united states, i hope soon. in terms of people 65 and older i would imagine the fda approved those booster shots by the end the end of september. and that kind of time frame makes sense. >> duncan: dr. agus, we also have been hearing the word breakthrough cases, how concerned should we be about those breakthrough cases in which people have been fully vaccinated but yet there is still getting infected with covid. >> right now people exposed to delta variant who have been fully vaccinated, most of them will have no symptoms. some will have mild symptoms, very few if any will have serious illness causing hospitalization, so that is good. the vaccine is clearly working in terms of blocking serious ill

david agus. he joins us now.eems like we have a disagreement here between the regulatory body and the manufacturer. why is pfizer saying they're going go with an application for emergency use? >> well, what pfizer has said, to be clear, is that their third shot given six months out dramatically increases immunity in individuals and is safe. the fda and the cdc will decide if it's necessary and needs to be used. 99.7%, 99.7% of hospitalizations of covid-19 patients in the united states now are unvaccinated. so we are not seeing significant breakthrough cases with serious disease. the same is true in israel is that we are not seeing hospitalization of vaccinated individuals in israel. what they are seeing is a small number of people who are elderly who got the vaccine early on in january are having some mild symptoms. period. so, it's not clear we need a booster, but it is clear that a booster will dramatically increase immunity. >> pfizer says they want to do this now, but the cdc and fda are saying it's not neede

david agus joins us now. good morning.ant to start with the cdc's advisory community on immunization practices come met yesterday. what were the findings, what can you tell us about the findings of that committee meeting? >> a group got together -- the first thing they talked about was guillain-barre, slightly more than you see in the general population but very, very rare. and they're going to put a label on it and make people aware so if it's caught early it can be easily treated. there was an emotional presentation, a guy who had a kidney transplant who said "i want that third shot. i can lie and go get it, but i want that third shot so i can be with my family." it was a beautiful, beautiful speech. in israel they've approved a third shot. we haven't done so here. there's a whole cohort of people that didn't respond to the vaccine. >> is -- is there a slightly higher risk with the johnson & johnson vaccine? >> with the johnson & johnson vccine there's a slightly higher risk of guillain-barre, a less risk of myocarditis,

david agus. it's surging right now. what concerns you most right now?> right now it's the fact that people think this is business as usual. i start to see the masks coming off, restaurants, you know, waiters don't have the masks when i saw them last night. what's really interesting is this is a new virus. delta variant is not like the old virus. this can spread outdoors it can spread remarkably easily. so the same behavior before that you could have done and been safe you're not safe now. people have to realize it's new. >> these vois or vocs, variants of interest or concern, there's not just one of them, there's several. which should we be looking to? >> over a million years the human genome changed 1%. this virus can change 1% in a day. so what happens is as the virus affects us -- remember, it's not alive. it goes inside our cells and divides and can change. and a new variant can come. we're hearing about variants potentially popping up in different places of the world where the virus is going rampant at the present time. the question is will it beco

david agus joins us, david, good morning. why the conflicting messages about booster shots?l because it will take time to do that and be ready when we need it. there's a population in the united states that will require a booster but at the present time no one requires a booster and we can know that by looking at the hospitalization rate across the country of people who have been vaccinated, and it's remarkably low. they're not getting serious infection. >> what do we know at this point, david, about how long immunity lasts? >> so, what we know, there's antibody studies showing six months antibodies start to fall. antibodies are a tiny piece of the puzzle. the t-cells are the key part of giving the vaccine immunity protective against the virus. my thought is we are going to see the elderly people towards the end of the year, next year, will need boosters. in israel, they started to give boosters to those immune surprised, on chemotherapy and autoimmune therapies, elderly and only people vaccinated getting six with covid-19. people who have been vaccinated, some cases are get

david agus joins us from los angeles. good morning.illion vaccinated -- a million-plus in a day sounds pretty good. are we moving now in the right or wrong direction? >> well, you know, we have a new enemy. so the data are changing. so the only way we know how a virus behaves is from real-world evidence. what we're seeing now is that this virus can spread like crazy. we're trying to counter vaccines, but we're not winning. 100,000 cases on friday. but anybody who says, well, the fact that you can get a breakthrough means the vaccines aren't working is wrong. 97% of current hospitalizations are those who are unvaccinated. so the vaccines are working remarkably well in terms of preventing serious illness and death which is critical. >> talk about these new guidelines. mask mandates are back in in flow in many cities and states. who is this directed at specifically? >> it's directed at you -- no, it's directed at everybody. you know, what -- what we're seeing is, you know, even people who are vaccinated and when they're exposed to the new
