well, at least that's what david axelrod thinks.g you how the president's poll numbers are down, how anger among voters is way up, and how deep of a funk people are in when it comes to the economy. add it all up, and i'd say it's a steep hill for the president to win re-election. not impossible but a steep hill. but his stop strategist is pushing back. in an e-mail to supporters david axelrod says, "despite what you hear in elite commentary, the president's support among base voters and in key demographic groups has stayed strong." well, let's put that to the test, comparing the president's standing a year ago to the president's standing now. we'll look at some of the key demographic groups as we do. first and foremost, we've talked about this, the president's overall approval rating. a year ago, 50%, down now to 43%. what about just among democrats? 84% approval a year ago. down. not a bunch but down significantly to 78% now. african-americans, one of the president's key constituencies. that one has stayed pretty stable. 89% a year

i don't dispute what david axelrod says.bama out there as well as the re-election campaign knows. what axelrod says sounds to me a lot like what he was saying in 2010 which is our numbers, whatever they may be, are far better than the republicans' numbers. the re-election campaign is trying to frame this as a choice between the democrats and the republicans. the republicans are going to frame it as a referendum on president obama and whether voters see it as one or the other could ultimately make the difference in whether president obama is re-elected or not. >> the president is in a presidency that is embattled with congressional republicans and so i want to go back to that slide that we just had up about the poll to look at republicans in congress. they are polling with a 19% approval compared to the president's 43% approval. the republicans in congress have a 72% disapproval. now, that is not of any individual, but it certainly is -- in terms of the fight that the president is in day to day in his day job of president of

david axelrod had this to say about the field of republicans right now and the republican ideas about job creation. he says, i'd be more 0 worried if i saw compelling new argument for how to lead the country. these guys are carrying the same old water. what is your response to that? >> well, the same old water like what? like to get the epa out of the warehouses across america that are shutting down businesses, like the national labor relations administration that are telling thousands of jobs for boeing that they can't relocate in south carolina? i mean, david axelrod and this president have nearly destroyed this economy in two and a half years, and their answer to the problem is to double down with yet another speech that americans are sick and tired of. i think we need to get serious about putting people back to work and good paying jobs again in america, and right now this president is content with speeches and forensic contests to see obviously how well he can deliver to a joint session of congress that we just don't need. jenna: just a final question about the election overall.

david axelrod talked about a titanic struggle. part of this has been enthusiasm for democrats. your fund raising was down in august. their fund raising was down in august. the campaigns as well. what are you doing to try to fix this? >> first of all let's talk about th cancel a numr of fund raisers in july. that had a ripple effect in august. we didn't plan for president to do joint fund raisings for us in august. the republicans continued to raise money throughout the debt crisis. i say. cantor and boehner raising money while they were negotiating with the president. this is going to come down to a choice. it's a choice about whether or not we're going to physical the path that the president has set that has begun to turn the economy around. or we're going to go back to the way the republicans were doing it that got us into this mess. so part of getting the ranks is saying look. we have a choice. as the president said, it's time to stop complaining, and stop crying and get to work. >> you have a base that's enthusiastic about defeating the president. but they're not enthusiast
