i was struck by something david axelrod told "the new york times" today. he said that he felt that no one made the broadest, most appealing case for change on that stage. do you agree? >> well, in my biased opinion i, of course, think i did. look, what we need is ideas that are bold enough to actually meet the challenge of the moment we're in and also capable of unifying the country. it's why, for example, i described how medicare for all who want it can work in a way that creates that public alternative, gets everybody covered, but unlike the medicare for all vision that senator sanders and warren have, it doesn't dictate that to the american people and risk further polarizing them which is difficult as a governing strategy not just politically speaking. look, we need to unify this country. it's not going to be about papering over our differences or watering down our values. it's forming solutions that engage the american majority. sometimes from following politics today you would forget that there is an american majority that believes that we need univer

. >> i think david axelrod captured in a tweet, he threw the long pass and overthrew it by a long shot. it seemed it was a calculated risk, it didn't work. i think it's going to hurt him. i think it's important that candidates like castro and others, they can differently eight selves from obama, they can do that in a way without having to hurl themselves or undermine obama's legacy. but they can say i think elizabeth warren gave an indication of how to do it. obama set the stage, we can build on what he has done. and i think if we can go that route we'll be in a better position. but i don't think you go the route that castro tried. >> steve, this is the second democratic debate in a row where joe biden seemed to survive on the excesses of his opponents. he was at times shaky last night, but in the second debate he survived and actually probably ended up gaining politically because everybody decided they weren't going attack barack obama in the second debate. the third debate was a love fest. they overcorrected. everybody was talking about how much they love barack obama. that was aweso

david axelrod was tweeting out saying how biden is becoming this gaffe and if he doesn't pull off something in new hampshire and iowa it's tough to tell voters in south carolina that he's worth voting for. >> i think the only reason why he might have more of a chance in new hampshire is because the progressive vote is split between biden and warren. if it was just one or the other in the race, he wouldn't have a shot. neil: we'll be monitoring that very very closely because they are all there not missing a chance to sort of get their two bits in. in the meantime we are still focusing on the remnants of dorian and that might be dismissing it right now, premature again they are still looking for survivors even the death toll is at 43 fears it could go into the hundreds or thousands. let's go to rick richmuth on what the storm is doing right now. rick: so well this is what the storm did at least in the mainland u.s. , strongest wind we've seen was in cape lookout, north carolina, before it made landfall and we definitely have strong winds that are this morning across cape cod and the islands i
