david bernard chief meteorologist from our miami station wfor has the latest on the storm's path. >> reporter: the nor'easter may be historic for parts of new england. we're continuing to see very heavy snowfall falling anywhere from parts of the jersey shore through new york, connecticut and as far to the east as massachusetts. some may make it into portions of vermont and new hampshire during the day. now when we look at where the storm will likely be going, it appears that by 7:00 a.m. the snow should begin to slacken off in new jersey, also the new york city metropolitan area, really messy around boston but during the day the low will begin to lift out to the north and east and everything will begin to clear from the west to the east. so hopefully all the travel problems that are ensuing those will get better and the planes should be able to land and take off once again with more regularity once we get further into the day. i'm david bernard. >>> president obama is back at the white house this morning following his re-election victory on tuesday night. he does not have much time

cbs news hurricane consultant david bernard our chief meteorologist from miami station wfor. where do things stand? >> reporter: things are improving. let's look at the latest radar and satellite picture. you can see the back edge of the snow flurries right there. it's all notifying the east. it's still nasty around the cape and in boston getting strong winds this morning. look at these snow totals. greenwich, connecticut, six inches. 4 1/2 inches in central park. newark six inches of snow. parts of new jersey, two communities freehold and manchester around a foot of snow has occurred. really incredible considering the time of year. so far today our highest wind gusts in new york city is 36. notice we still have gusts at martha's vineyard at 60 miles per hour. that's where the worst weather is. overall it gradually will move out by tonight and tomorrow morning. >> is there any good weather news? >> you know for once i would like to talk to you and not have something twirling behind me. there is good news. more the weekend much warmer, temperatures might be above-normal and yo

well, our hurricane consult abandon, david bernard says one factor is size. 20 years ago, when hurricane andrew hit south florida, it was a category 5, with 160-mile-per-hour winds. its winds extended just 280 miles across. sandy was 820 miles wide, two and a half times the size of andrew. another factor was the storm surge and its direction. sandy's surge pushed a wall of water toward the most densely populated part of the country during a high tide with a full moon, a formula for disaster. but not even a storm like sandy can postpone election day. today, new jersey officials said county clerk offices have been ordered to stay open all weekend to help process mail-in ballots, and in some hard-hit areas, military trucks will serve as polling maases on tuesday. with five days till the election, the presidential campaign is back on. americans appear to be back in the mood to spend. and after the storm, it's dinner by candlelight, along with every other meal. when the cbs evening news continues. david bernard is in miami.his is like a one-two punch for a lot of people. >> reporter: not good news. this has the potential to be a strong nor'easter. let's take everybody through the timetable in how i think this will evolve. this is our developing storm. this is tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. we'll have low pressure developing over florida. and during tuesday night and early wednesday morning this storm is going to begin to gather strength out of the outer banks of north carolina and during the day wednesday we'll see the weather deteriorate across the northeast. even areas inland like d.c., it may start as a heavy wet snow on wednesday evening before changing over to rain and it looks like the bad weather could last all the way into say thursday night and maybe even into friday night as well. >> david bernard, thank you so much. time to show you this morning's headlines. the china daily reports that china has two new military leaders. those generals were appointed to the central military commission of the c

david bernard, chief meteorologist of our miami affiliate cbs 4 is watching the forecast for us. david, where are the problems going to be today and tomorrow? >> well, the good news, norah, is when we look at the national weather this morning, we don't have a lot of problems. in fact, mostly, we just have a little bit of rain near chicago and a little bit of rain in north florida, but nothing that will cause any issues. let's go forward to tomorrow morning. this is the map wednesday morning. there is the coastal storm just off of cape hatteras. now there's two trends that have happened today. by wednesday evening, it appears the track of low might be a little bit further off the coast. if that's the case, the strongest winds might stay offshore, but it's increasing the chance that we could see snow along the i-95 corridor. now, as long as that snow is not really strong and really heavy and the effects of this coastal storm might be a little bit less than we were thinking, but if we get some areas of heavy snow, then we have to worry about power outages because limbs are going to c
