meteorologist david bernard of our miami station wfor is tracking this powerful weather front. >> the big story today is going to be the continued threat for heavy rain and severe weather from the southeast extending into the northeastern corner of the united states. this front is going to bring severe weather potential from the panhandle to this area. if we follow the front to the north we're looking at flood watches for a good part of the northeast, strong to severe thunderstorms possible this evening and tonight as that front approaches the coastline. on the opposite side of that, we're looking at cold air spilling into the midwest. the rain we saw yesterday in chicago is going to end as a little bit of light snow with temperatures in the upper 30s. very cold in the plains with highs in the teens and 20s. out west it looks pretty quiet in southern california. l.a., not bad. look for rain in the northwest. seattle and portland kind of dreary and temperatures in the 40s. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> overseas now, a police inspector says penny pinching may have caused th

david bernard of our cbs afell yacht wfor is following the cold track. in atlanta we may start with freezing rain but by this afternoon we're looking at a high of 48. that's all going to change over to liquid. if we travel north of there through the carolinas into the atlantic, d.c., as far north as philadelphia, light to moderate snows expected today. mainly one to two inches in most spots. it's not going to be a major storm and it's going to move out. highs in the mid-20s from new york to boston. cleveland after some morning snows will see an afternoon high temperature of 20 degrees. across the midwest it stays cold. and chicago at 29. 16 in minneapolis. dry across the plains. and out west it's still raining. in fact, another rainy day in los angeles, amgd that rain-x tends all the way along the coast to portland and seattle. again, light snows in the easement again, that's proeft not going to be major storm and will end by this evening. i'm david bernard for the cbs news in miami. >>> the senate is expected to vote on a 50.50 billion dollar aid bill.

david bernard, chief meteorologist for our miami affiliate wfor, has the latest forecast. >> well, we continue to see some of the coldest weather the midwest and the northeast have seen in about two years, and it doesn't look like things are going to get much better for today. in the southeast we're going to look for dry weather, cool, 52 in atlanta, 53 in memphis. but, of course we head north, and that's where the bitter chill will be. we'll continue to see strong lake-effect snows continuing. cleveland, only 18 today, 16 in pittsburgh. new york city, we're looking for a high of around 21. only 18 in boston. a look at montreal won't get above zero, forecast minus 6 there. across the midwest, especially across chicago, not a lot better. a high of 24. minneapolis, it's only going to be near 8 degrees. you can see the warmer weather across the plains. again, it's been pretty quiet in the midwest, but a new storm headed in and rain in portland and seattle and snow in the mountains. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. >>> well, this morning the house is expected to vote on a temporary ext
