cbs news weather consultant david bernard is following the massive weather system. >> the big winter storm across the midwest will be taking shape during the day today. look how big the winter storm warning area is. it's all of nebraska, kansas, and missouri, even portions of arkansas. we're talking about a lot of snow covering the big part of the midwest. this is welcome snow because of the severe drought that's ongoing. now, it will change all over to rain in objection today with a high of 48 but all snow in oklahoma and kansas city with temperatures staying in the mid-20s throughout the day. how much snow will fall, where we see some of these purple areas, we're talking an foot of snow by the time it's said and done friday morning. but a large area of this dark blue could see up to a foots of snow and that includes places like wichita, kansas city, and even areas west of st. louis could see some very heavy snow amounts. amounts. again, that's going to be friday morning. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. >>> overseas to the third day of oscar pistorius's bail murder hearing, but

cbs news weather consultant david bernard has the latest. >>> the major nor easter is taking shape this morning right off the banks of north carolina and this is going to rapidly strengthen throughout the day as it continues to move off to the north and northeast. by 7:00 this evening we've got a full-blown storm with rain mixing with snow from the coast from long island to north. everywhere north of there that's going to be heavy snow, and then overnight tonight into saturday morning that is when the storm and the blizzard is really going to be raging and it will be all snow up and down the coastline. some of this will be extremely heavy, and, of course, in spots we're also going to see blizzard conditions. wet is the snow potential through saturday. where we see these pink areas we could be talking more than two feet of snow in the most extreme cases and the purple area extending into northern new jersey indicates the possibility of a foot of snow and maybe even a little bit more than that. again, it's just a case where some areas are going to see a little more than that and some less

a major snowstorm is on the way and david bernard is our cbs news weather consultant. david, three questions: what? when? how much? >> we're going to answer all of those tonight, scott, and the answers probably aren't what people are going to want to hear. let's give you an idea of how big of an area this is going to cover. all of new england, the state of new york, northern new jersey, northeastern pennsylvania under a winter storm watch. this green area running the corridor between boston and providence, that's a blizzard watch that's in affect for friday and saturday. now, this is the weather map, the forecast map for friday evening and we think a major low will be just off of the jersey shore. it's going to be strengthening all day with very heavy snows developing all over southern new england and even into the new york city area and watch, this is going to track northeast friday, friday night into the day saturday and by this point we think a full-blown blizzard is likely along the maine coastline, including portions of southeastern massachusetts and all of rhode i

cbs news weather consultant david bernard has the latest on the blockbuster storm. >> our winter storm in the midwest is finally beginning to wind down. this is how much snow we're expecting the remainder of the day, generally 3 to 6 inches possible especially across portions of iowa, wisconsin. chicago, we're looking at 3 to 5 inches of snow by this evening, but not anything where we saw yesterday where we were measuring the snow well over a foot. now the second form for the weekend is developing over the southeast. thunderstorms possible in north florida this afternoon. we just don't know how low that coastal low will be over the weekend. the meantime new england pretty quiet. 40 for new york, 42 for philadelphia and this afternoon 37 in boston. here's what's left of the big midwest storm center near chicago this afternoon. 35 and the snow will gradually be entering the windy city. but kansas city and omaha, highs only in the 20s as they begin to dig out. i'm david bernard, cbs news, miami. >>> now to south africa where the judge is expected to decide today whether to grant olympic s

david bernard is our weather consultant. david, what can we expect tonight? >> all the ingredients are coming together for that powerhouse area of low pressure. what i want to do is show you where we expect the storm to be tomorrow morning. those two systems are going to come together right here on the outer banks of north carolina. snow will be breaking out across most of new england tomorrow, maybe even the coastal areas, and during the day tomorrow, by tomorrow evening, heavy snow over the entire region, maybe right along the coast and in new york, we might be mixing a little bit, and during the day saturday, a full-blown blizzard for southeastern new england. late in the day saturday we might start to get a little bit of an improvement there. how much snow are we talking about? this pink area, that could be up to two feet of snow across southeastern new england, and even this purple area we now extend into northern new jersey, including new york we could be talking about well over a foot of snow if all the ingredients come together. >> pelley: david, what

cbs news weather consultant david bernard is following the storm. >> the big plains blizzard will continue to dump very heavy snow throughout the region throughout the day today. in fact, this is how much more we're expecting, and the bull's eye is going to be over missouri where as much as a foot of snow could fall. some areas could locally see up to two feet of snow in a few spots. as the storm heads toward chicago, it begins to weaken. we could still see three six inches of snow even across northern portions of illinois. severe weather today is going to be confined to the southeast from the north and south carolina coastlines through northern and central portions of florida. but drying out behind that. new orleans today, 60 degrees. that will be a big improvement. rain is going spread into the northeast from the southwest. pittsburgh, d.c., philadelphia will have rain by the afternoon, including cleveland. to the west, that's where the core of the winter storm will be. heavy snow kansas city maybe even into portions of st. louis, and again snow spreading into chicago throughout the day.

. >>> cbs news david bernard is tracking the weather. david, what's the latest? >> the storm is taking shape this morning. let's go right to our radar. you can see the snow start form on the outer banks of north carolina. already rain spreading ahead of it. look at the forecast storm track. by 7:00 this evening a powerful low will be located just east of atlantic city. again, new york is going to be right on the edge of the rain/snow line but all areas will be experiencing very heavy snows and the blizzard will take shape. especially over southeastern new england and connecticut, that's when the worst of it will be. now look at this snow potential. this really hasn't changed all that much. the area where you could see two feet or more of snow is generally in this area here, but i'm keeping the line of more than a foot of snow all the way back into the new york city area. it's how fast the rain/snow changeover occurs. we don't know just yet. >> david, i'm sorry to hear that. it's not just snow. it's going to be the wind. >> right. you have the accumulating snow bu

have a team of correspondents on this breaking story but first we'll go to our weather consultant david bernard. david, where's the storm headed? >> reporter: well let's take a look at the radar scott. when we do that, we can see those two pieces of the storm that we're referring to, the main low is here south of long island but here comes that second piece and that's getting trained into the low and that's going to cause the storm to continue to strengthen during the overnight hour. here's the storm track. as we go overnight and by saturday 7:00 a.m. the worst of the blizzard will be in southeast new england things will begin improving in new jersey and also the new york metropolitan area and it looks like by late in the day everybody should gradually begin to see some improvement. >> pelley: and how much snow >> well our accumulation map has shifted a little bit during the day today but again we're targeting southeastern new england where we see the purples and the pink. that's where we can see one to two feet of snow and it's not out of the question an isolated spot may see more than that. s

cbs news weather consultant david bernard is tracking it all. david, good morning. >> good morning, norah. we have a big mess in the midwest as you've been alluding to. here's what it looks like on the radar this morning. the bright white are heavy snow squalls moving across wichita and that snow is just ready to move into kansas city where it's going to snow hard it looks like for about the entire day. our forecast models are showing that snow pivoting from the southwest to the northeast as we go throughout the morning and the afternoon hours, so wichita will see improvements late today, but northeast kansas and most of missouri we're going to be looking at heavy snowfall for the next at least 12 hours and how much more snow? look at this purple area anywhere in here we could be talking about maybe a foot maybe a little bit more than that. the snow rates are incredible this morning they're one to two inches per hour and it could snow like that for the next 6 to 12 hours in some locations. we don't want to forget about folks in the south from hou

cbs weather consultant david bernard is with us. david, what is the potential for this storm? >> i think you set set it up just right. there are blizzard conditions expected friday night into saturday. the blizzard watching green has now been extended for eastern long island and connecticut. everyone else is under at least a winter storm watch at the current time. now, let's give you the setup. this is the potential storm track beginning friday morning. i think the friday morning storm track is what we're going to notice. this area of low pressure over the carolinas that's going to rapidly move through the northeast during the day and by the time we get to friday evening it may start as rain right along the coast, but the inland areas in blue, that is ail going to be snow. and as we go friday night into saturday morning it should be all snow across the northeast and new england and that's when the blizzard will really be ranging late friday night into saturday morning and even into saturday afternoon. southeastern new england could still be in blizzard conditions and very heav
