gloria borger, david chalian, thanks, guy, so much.ator chuck schumer says his decision to go against president obama on a proposed nuclear deal with iran was one of the most difficult choices that he's had to make. schumer has vowed to vote no on the deal. at a press conference he talked about the upcoming vote in congress. >> there are some who say i can force my colleagues to vote with me and certainly i'm going to try to persuade my colleagues that my view point is right. but anyone who thinks you can force somebody to vote with you in the senate doesn't understand the senate and i won't be able to force anybody to vote my way. i can argue my point of view and see if they accept it. everyone believes this is a vote of conscience, they respect my vote of conscience and i'll respect theres which ever way they come out. >> schumer is concerned the deal leaves iran with the potential to build a nuclear bomb after ten years. white house press secretary josh earnest says the president's difference of opinion goes back more than a decade.

david chalian and nia-malika henderson, both still in cleveland unable to tear themselves away. david, was the take away that very beginning of the actual debate when not a word was spoken but a hand was raised and it effectively said to everyone in that room that donald trump is maybe not as committed to being a republican as he is to winning? >> what an unbelievable way to start the debate, ashleigh, right? just amazing. listen, you have to remember, the folks in that room represent the republican establishment. that's not donald trump's crowd. so when you hear the boos from there that he won't support the nominee yet and make that pledge, from that crowd, that would be expected, those are not the people fuelling donald trump's rise right now. i'm not sure how much this is going to hurt him. i think that moment, what it does is leaves us with the question out of cleveland, out of the debate, did donald trump just wall off his ability to grow his support beyond where it is? he's got the firebrand. he's got that bombastic style that has really rallied a lot of the conservatives t

enter any expert, david chalian and senior political reporter n nia-malika henderson.m going to start with you, nia-malika, if i can. the issue of the e-mail. so much depends on how the headline is broadcast or read or printed and how much eye rolling goes on because if f you ask some people there is no scandal and this is much ado about nothing. if you ask others it goes back to the notion of having a personal server in the first place even for private e-mail. but look what people say. the registered voters said no matter what, 56% said that was wrong. is this costing her this big slide in favorability? >> well it's not doing her any good. if you look into the numbers there is a partisan divide, republicans much more likely to think she did something wrong democrats something like 65% saying she didn't do anything wrong. the interesting poll is independents, 63% say she did so do something wrong. there's another split here that i think in some ways speaks to what he's banging on, her underlying strength. there's a 15-point gender gap. men much more likely to see somet

all of this with cnn's white house correspondent michelle kosinski and our political director david chalian. you're on martha's vineyard where president obama is taking a vacation. joe biden is also on vacation in south carolina. what are you hearing from your sources who exactly biden is consulting as he weigh this is decision? >> reporter: he's not taking up his whole vacation on this subject. it's hard to imagine he hasn't been reaching out all along. his son died in may. he's wanted to spend this time with his family, get over the grieving process. it's interesting to hear now he is making some of those calls from what we understand is just a few close friends, politicos he's very close to just to kind of get a feel and put out those initial calls to get a sense of what this possibility would really look like and what the likelihood is, what they're thinking, and he with a nts to hear some advice as well, dana. >> i'm sure he does. david, you are poring through the polls. you know them better than anybody. you heard howard dean say he doesn't appeal to young voters, the backbone of the

. >> we still have david chalian, right? we don't. okay. i'll put this to you, gloria, you look at that debate stage where you almost need more people on that debate stage. you want to recruit some people maybe to make it a little more feisty. who knows, maybe it's still going to be feisty but it's such a different situation, the field, and this is the most visual representation how different it will be between the two sides. >> if you look at the debate stage, the republicans, the big boy debate it is big boys all boys. the debate stage, the democratic will have hillary clinton, a question that we have no answer to whether, in fact joe biden would get in this race. but i think in the democratic debate it would all be kind of all of them ganging up on hillary clinton and some of them like martin o'malley are complaining why is the democratic national committee in charge of all of this because we want to have more debates because we want to get our name recognition up and there's a skepticism that the dnc is really on hillary's side. >> righ

let's bring in nia-malika henderson, david chalian and sara murray. nia, you've been looking at these numbers, behind these numbers. can he stay this way? he seems to be doing better and better and better. >> that's right. as we set up almost daily and say well, something will trip him up. hasn't happened yet. i think the conventional wisdom about presidential politics is that at some point the empire strikes back and by the empire it's the party. and if you look at the past few presidential campaigns, there are upstarts that end to do well but then a mortar moderate candidate break us there. then mitt romney broke through. in some places where donald trump seems to be on the upswing but we'll see how voters respond in the voting booth. >> looks like people didn't respond favorably to jeb bush's performance in that first republican presidential debate. look at this, 45% trust donald trump more than in june. 32% say he's the only one they trust to handle isis. 32%. what do you make of these numbers? >> the first thing that pops to me is how dramaticall

let's bring in our panel, our cnn political director david chalian is here along with senior washingtonnt jeff zeleny and senior political reporter nia-malika henderson. guys, thanks very much. what's your take on trump in this new poll. what's the message the respondents are giving the american public? >> he's in an entirely new position as a dacandidate becau now he is as competitive as any other republican against hillary clinton and that was not the case, as you showed. she was beating him by 24 points so he has made a tremendous amount of progress among republican which is has now allowed him to be seen as an actual contender for the presidency and now he's in the ball game with his fellow republican competitors. >> it's almost within the margin of error if you think -- what's the margin of error? four or five points, right? that's almost within a margin of error. nia, the numbers for hillary clinton and bernie sanders are moving in opposite directions. hillary clinton is now ahead 47% 29% over bernie sanders but a month ago he was ahead 56-19. that's not a good trend for her. >> t

so let's get right to it with cnn political reporter sara murray and cnn political director david chalian. i want to go right to those last numbers. the women, 60% for women? this after he accused a journalist who gave him tough questions of being on her monthly cycle? how do we explain that, david? >> i think we explain it that donald trump was very successful in taking that controversy and make it yet again the media and the establishment turning against him. and that ride up his supporters. that rallies them to his cause because that is what they find so appealing is that he takes on the way things have been done in the past, politics as usual. >> so let's talk about the educated versus the less educated because there's some interesting numbers when you look at those. it turns out he has a very favorable opinion among those without college degrees. so 43% of those support him while those who are more educated with college degrees, it's 33% of those. i guess the question here, sarah, would be this. no matter how many crazy pipe dream things people criticize him for throwing out there as

correspondent jeff zeleny senior political correspondent nia-malika henderson and political director david chalian. thanks guys for chatting about this. and there have been a number of store ryes s stories about biden's chances of jumping in the race which you started jeff with your reporting. and we know a close confidante to joe biden, his son who passed away started a draft biden super pac. how do we read that? >> there are signs to the family hunter biden, who are supportive of him. josh elk horn is a democratic strategist in wilmington delaware very close to the vice president and biden a rat turks biden world, as we call it. this is a sign that it's coming inside this circumstance that will there's a contingent of people very close to the vice president who want him to seriously, seriously consider this. now, it's important to note that you talk to anyone who's close to the vice president. no one says they know what he's thinking but they say he has not yet made up his mine he's keeping an open mind at least for the next month or so. >> but if the president wanted to shut this down he could,

cnn political director david chalian. and dana bash back with us. as well as gloria borger. let's say the republican party, if they look at these polls in iowa and new hampshire, what are theically thi they thinking? >> i think the first thing they're thinking is how is bernie sanders surging against hillary clinton. >> there are numbers that become troubling for the party apparatus that's in charge of making that happen. but i think they are sort of tempered, a lot of their criticism of donald trump is tempered i about the fact that some of these voters are registering support for trump, these are the people that go out and volunteer for phone banks. they're wary about criticizing donald trump. they expect that donald trump will come down on his own. i think that's a little bit more of a hope being a strategy. >> that's really interesting. both these polls, gloria, they're ultimately good news for trump. the story line in iowa is a little different for him than in new hampshire. he's gone down in new hampshire. what's behind that. >> hope was a pretty good strategy for bara
