and we're also joined by cnn's david chalian. good morning to you all. all right, david, you are a connoisseur an expert. as someone who has been through many, many inaugurations, tell us what this one you expect tomorrow. what are you going to be watching to unfold? and how are you going to be watching trump's speech? >> yeah, i mean, first and foremost, the tone and tenor of the speech is something that i'm curious to see what it is, because that first speech in 2017 from trump, you remember, it was so dark, everyone observing. i mean, you played the clip there of american carnage, which was sort of the headline from it, but the the picture he was painting of america that he was taking over. it was not an uplifting kind of speech at all. and so his transition has had a totally different tone than his transition did eight years ago. and i'm curious to see if that carries through in the way he sets forth the course ahead for the nation at this inaugural address. >> what are you expecting, especially when this moves indoors? >> well, so he is talking about

david chalian, could this new hegseth report change the minds you think of at least some republicans who just hours earlier voted to advance in this procedural vote? his nomination. >> everything i'm hearing off the hill is that that is not the likeliest scenario here, that, as caitlin was just suggesting, the white house feeling pretty good about seeing the number 51 on the board to advance the hegseth nomination to a final vote tomorrow. listen, the way one republican described it to me is sort of the collins and murkowski no votes were kind of baked into the original calculus of the hegseth confirmation battle, if you will, wolf. we'll see. there have been other shaky republicans on the hegseth nomination who haven't affirmatively come out and said, yes, i am absolutely voting yes. so we'll see as we proceed to a vote. but today's vote, that test vote to to close the debate and move to a final vote, that's a pretty good signal that pete hegseth is most likely on his way to the pentagon. >> well, let me let me get scott jennings to weigh in. scott, how damaging potentially could th

david chalian, what did you make of that? >> i thought the speech was really interesting because it wasn't the speech i anticipated that joe biden was going to give as a farewell address, because i suspected, after reading the few interviews that he's done or whatever, that he was going to really focus on trying to tie a bow on his legacy. and i was just surprised to hear him leave the country with a directive and a warning going forward that that's what he chose to lean into, rather than his own personal legacy. he did a little bit of that, obviously, but it just that moment of the speech, i think we all your ears perked up and you were like, this just has a a different approach to his goodbye. it was it was this to do list for the american people to take up the mantle of guarding against democracy. but beware of this thing that he sees as a, you know, troubling warning that the country should be aware of. >> and he specifically made an analogy to the robber barons back in the day. and on that note, i just want to show our v

she's got much more on that from the white house and was talking with david chalian last hour. and in that interview, it helps to show the president's focus early on his priorities as he as he begins this term, not just we know from his executive orders, but also his his focus in the in these first few weeks. what are your big takeaways from it? >> i think that's absolutely right. his rhetoric is really showing that so much of what he's been doing with just three days so far in office has been really geared toward his base and delivering on things that they want. between the january 6th pardons him, gutting the program, sending thousands of active duty troops to the border, all of that playing into this. and then, of course, in that interview last night with sean hannity opening the door to really going after some of his political opponents and suggesting perhaps that former president joe biden should be investigated. and i will say as well that that is a departure from what donald trump has said in the past on this. just last month, he did an interview with nbc news where he s

. >> let's bring back our team of political experts, david chalian. i mean, of the things that have come up about rf kennedy jr.. many of which he's confirmed. this one is especially odd and bizarre. >> though. fits with a pattern, right? i mean, i mean, that is it is. and it's obviously very powerful to hear from his cousin, caroline kennedy, who, you know, as she noted in the video, was in a government position and serving as ambassador, u.s. ambassador to australia during the biden administration. so when when bobby kennedy jr.'s family was coming out, you know, against him when he was first running against joe biden in the democratic primary and then running an independent bid for the presidency before he got out and backed donald trump, she wasn't sort of leading the charge there. and so it's sort of a new, powerful voice, obviously, to that. but just hearing her words, it makes you step back. and obviously she's doing this on the eve of his confirmation hearing, just at the same moment that it is not clear yet that he has locked up all the votes

cnn's john king, jasmine wright of notice, cnn's alayna treene and cnn's david chalian.lena, i'm going to go to you first. you have this news. what more can you tell us? >> right. >> so i'm told. >> according to. >> two sources who are familiar with some of these discussions, that essentially some trump administration officials have had discussions over potentially inviting the people that donald trump pardoned on monday, the january 6th. convicts. unclear exactly who he's thinking about. if it includes just the people he pardoned or also those who he commuted the sentences of, including oath keepers and proud boys. but there have been discussions about having them come to the visit for a white house and a potential meeting with donald trump. now, as you mentioned, dana, it's still unclear in my conversations. they said it's unclear if this is even going to happen. it is under consideration. we have talked about it, but it's still unclear whether it's going to happen, as well as whether or not, um, or who who they would invite invite specifically. so it's still up in the

cnn's washington bureau chief political director, david chalian, is here. david, what are your thoughts? >> well, as you said, you want to just go through the facts that we know. and here here's something that the president himself said at that press conference. he said, quote, we don't know necessarily that it was the controller's fault. and then proceeded to speak at length, at something directly at odds with that which he said, which is, we don't know, is the controller's fault. and then went on to talk about diversity programs and how it relates to potentially hiring air traffic controllers because he wanted to put one of his pet issues in the first ten days of this administration, front and center. nobody, as you know, dana has a larger microphone or megaphone than the president of united states and him walking into the briefing room and trying to dominate and shift and create and craft the narrative around this tragedy that occurred last night was clear for everyone to see. and the other fact that we should just put out there is as this investigation i
