[laughter] [unintelligible] thank you very very much. next, someone who represents another first in our city's history. three years ago, district 3 elected the first chinese- american to the board of supervisors, and immediately after he was sworn in, history was made again as he was sworn in as the board president. please welcome supervisor david to come here on behalf of the sentences go board of supervisors -- david chiu. >> aloha. it is an incredible honor to be here with you tonight. after 163 years, this is a glorious sight. i have spoken with mayor lee about the history of our community and we talk about what happened in 1870's with the first anti-asian exclusion acts. we talk about what happens after the 1906 eart

we're here with david chiu from district 3.hat includes chinatown, fisherman's wharf, and part of the russian hill neighborhood. he was elected to the board in november of 2008 and has served as board president since january of 2009. we will get to know him and talk about the toughest issues facing them. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background. >> my parents immigrated to the united states in the 1960's. i was the first kid born in the u.s. my parents sacrificed everything so that their kids could have the opportunities that they wanted when they came here. i grew up in the boston area and lived in different parts of boston. i went to catholic price school in dorchester, a section of boston. -- i went to catholic high school in dorchester, a section of boston. because of my parents, my brothers and i were all blessed to go to harvard university. that is where i went to school. it was intense. i stayed there for law school and have a master's in public policy from there. those are subjects i decided to stud

about one year and a half ago, supervisor david chiu and malia cohen, along with former supervisor sophie maxwell, and the police department, commissioners, including commissioner joe marsh, we met with various members of the community. particularly, district 11 and district 10, talking about violence on our sambar . the community, including a number of resident groups, had appealed to us to come up with some better ideas on how to keep the community safe. being the public safety was the number one concern among everyone, particularly during the very tense situation that occurred a year and a half ago, and as we deliberated within the city administrator's office, we concluded community policing had to take an additional improvement, if you will, by embracing what the community wanted to see. particularly on the muni lines, in areas where there might be isolation that occurred in those areas, subject to activities that would end up being -- resulting in violence. after several months of meeting with this idea, we met with members of the community that said, if you hired from our area and i

i congratulate david chiu and the board for their decisions. they recently allowed at&t to launch their uverse. many customers have said, i want an alternative to what is happening, and so they have cut that alternative. they will be helping the best they can and balancing that with neighborhood policies as well. i know at&t will do that. they have promised to do it. it will be a good product. i also want to thank at&t because being such a good company to work with, they have done other things for our city. in addition to increasing employment here, offering service, making sure they were a global company, and global visitors here that's terry and ken mentioned. they are looking for things to partner up with us. one of the leading things it is a hand-held mobile phones for them in emergency services. all of those have been donated by at&t, because of their recognition of increasing community policing, working with these ambassadors to speak eight different languages in our neighborhoods, and helping them prevent crime, making sure the community

[applause] i also want to thank the many candidates that we considered. one of the things that we are blessed here in san francisco was we had many individuals who we knew could step up to take this role. thank you for all of you who we spoke to about this. this is also an historic day for the asian-american community. for a community that has been here in san francisco for over 160 years, i am a product of that community. i know that ed and all of us who are of asian-american descent feel the legacy. and i want to thank all of you who have been part of this historic moment to make this happen. and say that this is obviously

i'm here along with board president david chiu, supervisor cohen, who represents his district, community leaders that are here, extremely valuable city officials, police chief, juvenile probation official as well. i see tom. welcome, welcome. [applause] tom has historically been a big supporter of young and thank you very much, tom, for being here too. i am part of a growing course of people who are appreciative of this fantastic decision that was made by c.y.c., in concert with bay view residents to open up an office here in the middle of the bay view district. you know, when you look around and perhaps if you look at the last few years, maybe other people decided they would leave. maybe they felt comfortable, this wasn't a place for them. and then the violence started about a year and a half ago. i know all of the supervisors came with me to start forming solutions, some of the solutions started coming out. we started the community ambassador's program, that has focused on the hot spot, transit lines that occurred. we worked very closely with our new police chief, who was then captain

because it has been so successful, david chiu and malia cohen protected some funding in the budget for that, but we combine that smartly with funding from lennar corp., who is also making a big investment in district 10 as well. i want to thank both supervisors for their support, and also the office of civic engagement. we are realizing this program as a permanent launch, one that will embrace the community but one that will continue this important public-private relationship we have bill it -- between our police department, first responders, and also with residents of san francisco, residents coming from the baby you and poured a lot area now engaged with us in a multi legal way, creating conversations, directing people, and making sure they feel safe, as well as our safe along these lines. so thank you.
