david chiu and i, when we go to showdown with you after work well know who our partners are. congratulations to you. it has been a wonderful short period of time for this company to make such dramatic changes, but it is changes that san francisco has looked forward to for quite sometime. the company locating here right in central market at the invitation that -- david chiu and i worked hard along with supervisor kim in creating the payroll tax exemption corridor, if you will. the company has not only taken advantage of that, but in locating here from their original space on county send street, when they started a couple of years back, when they started, they had about 1,000 customers. today it over 5,000 customers -- almost 10,000 customers. these are customers reaching out and reaching them on online help desk, yoob web 2.0. i don't profess to know. maybe david knows about all the programs out there that people need help on that are going on, but people do need forward-looking help on the web to be able to navigate that and determine how it can help their business, their own

about one year and a half ago, supervisor david chiu and malia cohen, along with former supervisor sophie maxwell, and the police department, commissioners, including commissioner joe marsh, we met with various members of the community. particularly, district 11 and district 10, talking about violence on our sambar . the community, including a number of resident groups, had appealed to us to come up with some better ideas on how to keep the community safe. being the public safety was the number one concern among everyone, particularly during the very tense situation that occurred a year and a half ago, and as we deliberated within the city administrator's office, we concluded community policing had to take an additional improvement, if you will, by embracing what the community wanted to see. particularly on the muni lines, in areas where there might be isolation that occurred in those areas, subject to activities that would end up being -- resulting in violence. after several months of meeting with this idea, we met with members of the community that said, if you hired from our area and i

supervisor mirkarimi: and ross mirkarimi and david chiu are here. we are putting our head to go in putting together this agreement. we have to prove there is going to be an increased economic activity as a result of this event, and there will be. there is going to be over $1 billion of economic activity. 8,800 new jobs, 700 of them for construction alone. that is the kind of economic activity that is going to be here. it is not just a great boating activity. all of the labor people here know it is going to be a great economic boost. the port knows that, the city knows that. our office of economic development knows that. that is why we are all here together. we want to make sure we do everything right. by the end of the year, people like ed risk and john and the planning commission will have the finley draft done. we are moving forward to make sure all of this gets put in place. i want to let you know that i am grateful. lieutenant grateful, willie brown, speaker perez, and i am very grateful, governor, for you signing this, because we do need that e

i'm here along with board president david chiu, supervisor cohen, who represents his district, community leaders that are here, extremely valuable city officials, police chief, juvenile probation official as well. i see tom. welcome, welcome. [applause] tom has historically been a big supporter of young and thank you very much, tom, for being here too. i am part of a growing course of people who are appreciative of this fantastic decision that was made by c.y.c., in concert with bay view residents to open up an office here in the middle of the bay view district. you know, when you look around and perhaps if you look at the last few years, maybe other people decided they would leave. maybe they felt comfortable, this wasn't a place for them. and then the violence started about a year and a half ago. i know all of the supervisors came with me to start forming solutions, some of the solutions started coming out. we started the community ambassador's program, that has focused on the hot spot, transit lines that occurred. we worked very closely with our new police chief, who was then captain

instead, we have from the board of supervisors, david chiu. pplause] supervisor chiu: thank you, and first of all, i want to thank the incredible men and women who are serving at the leadership of the mta. many of us at the board of supervisors were anxious and curious about the position that would be announced today. i can tell you from the board and, we are all incredibly gratified with the wonderful decision made today. congratulations for that. i also want to obviously say a few brief words about ed, and then we all want to hear from him. i have known him for three years. before i was elected to the board of supervisors, he was someone i knew was incredibly well respected not only in my district, but throughout the city, and as someone who understood the details and the big picture. we have worked closely together on improving our roads. i have cycled with him. i know he is very committed to making sure we will see great safety and great industry ahead, and he is someone who rides the bride and walks the walk. we have sat on the knee -- on

we're here with david chiu from district 3.hat includes chinatown, fisherman's wharf, and part of the russian hill neighborhood. he was elected to the board in november of 2008 and has served as board president since january of 2009. we will get to know him and talk about the toughest issues facing them. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background. >> my parents immigrated to the united states in the 1960's. i was the first kid born in the u.s. my parents sacrificed everything so that their kids could have the opportunities that they wanted when they came here. i grew up in the boston area and lived in different parts of boston. i went to catholic price school in dorchester, a section of boston. -- i went to catholic high school in dorchester, a section of boston. because of my parents, my brothers and i were all blessed to go to harvard university. that is where i went to school. it was intense. i stayed there for law school and have a master's in public policy from there. those are subjects i decided to stud

i agree with david chiu's proposal to mitigate this so that businesses can survive. the truth is, the proposal will not save anybody -- if this money is going into something where you something wherermi's an -- where you care about mri's, do that. it is very on wheeled and -- un wieldy. 1000 people have to be carried when they have gone from an employee. we cannot afford that. ok? there is a lot of administrative cost you are not considering. what about somebody who has worked for 10 different people in san francisco? that is a lot to deal with. thank you. supervisor campos: thank you. next speaker. >> supervisors, you know, we are always arguing for jobs ourselves. when we do, we're arguing for jobs with full and substantial health care benefits. let me give you a point of view on business i have not heard so far. supervisor campos' amendment is pro-responsible business. all of our members work for businesses that provide full health care benefits. most of our workers are in the private sector. most of our work, 2/3 in the average year, is in the private sector, not

we had leah and for almost nine months in amsterdam and chairman david chiu and others for a week. and there is such great organization here and there are so many ideas. there are so many professional little here already about bike infrastructure and the future of biking. but it will come down to implementation and it's perhaps a bit like riding the wiggle. you have to push hard and hopefully we might be a sort of additional support, a sort of small electricity motor for you to push your -- up that hill. and it will come down to implementation and leadership and it's great to have a sort of down to earth approach during these two days. working in teams on i think three important places in town. market, mid market. there's a lot going on. last week we had people from one of the biggest and the greatest argument tech yurl firms in the world, the colehouse firm here in san francisco. they talked with people from twitter and people in the city about mid market developments and good infrastructure for bikes and tradition is a part of it. i'm so hope that polk street is in it as well. it

because it has been so successful, david chiu and malia cohen protected some funding in the budget fort, but we combine that smartly with funding from lennar corp., who is also making a big investment in district 10 as well. i want to thank both supervisors for their support, and also the office of civic engagement. we are realizing this program as a permanent launch, one that will embrace the community but one that will continue this important public-private relationship we have bill it -- between our police department, first responders, and also with residents of san francisco, residents coming from the baby you and poured a lot area now engaged with us in a multi legal way, creating conversations, directing people, and making sure they feel safe, as well as our safe along these lines. so thank you. so we worked quickly would supervisor kim and david chiu to study it the payroll tax structure was job-punishing. we realized that as companies started here, they wanted to grow. the numbers were speaking to us. twitter was sitting there were going to grow from about four hundred employees took maybe 3000 in the next two years. all of that was going to be taxed on them, and they wanted to maybe look at another location without that. >> so it twitter did not want to pay taxes. >> no, there were willing to pay the taxes, but they did not want to be punished further growth was the distinction we wanted to make it a we work with supervisor kim to do two things. let's create an exemption and place it on one of the areas we want to revitalize, and that is midmarket. we went from 10th street, included parts of the tenderloin, and traded a six- year exemption in which it twitter said, that is attracted -- attractive enough, and they ended up signing a long-term lease. they and the shorenstein properties are getting their buildings ready to be retrofitted for seismic safety. >> this is on new employees w
