[applause] >> hello i'm city attorney david chiu. first i would like to everyone to understand how we got here. in the 1970s, certain pharmaceutical companies created powerful description opioids and manufactured a crisis of undiagnosed pain. extremely dangerous and addictive opioids were marketed to patients as safe, we now that was a lie. prescription includes normally reserved for end of life care were given to people with headaches and back pain. this resulted in millions of american and entire generation becoming dependent on opioids. every aspect from manufacturing manufactures to retailers to distributing played a part in exacerbating this crisis. five years ago, san francisco brought a lawsuit against every part of the supply chain distributing distributors and dispensers like walgreens who pushed out these drugs to patients without regard obligation to flag suspicious orders. they were more concerned than profit than following their legal obligations. they did not give their pharmacist time to conduct due diligence pressurin

catherine stefani and city attorney david chiu this morning introducelong with gun violence prevention advocates. they say this proposed ordinance will expand places where guns are prohibited. the proposal is in response to a us supreme court ruling last year that overturned a new york gun safety law that required a special license to carry a concealed weapon. christien kafton will be bringing us more details on this proposed legislation in san francisco coming up tonight on the news at five. well, two bay area members of congress were among democrats calling on republicans to bring several pieces of gun violence prevention legislation to a vote on the house floor. north bay congressman mike thompson and san francisco congresswoman nancy pelosi are pushing to advance the three bills and assault weapons ban. the bipartisan background checks act and the enhanced background checks act. now, the democrats are using what's known as a discharge petition, which allows them to circumvent republican leadership to bring a vote to the house floor if they get a majority to sign the petition. first

san francisco supervisor kathryn stephanie and city attorney david chiu will join community leaders during the announcement at city hall. the event is just getting underway and we'll show you their presentation on today's noon news. well police say a shooting in antioch that claimed the life of an 18 year old woman was started when people who were not invited to a party at a home showed up to that house anyway. nadia tirado was shot and killed, six others wounded here. it happened after midnight sunday at a house on sunset lane. the motive is under investigation and no arrests have been made. we estimate somewhere between 45 to 60 parents that could come forth and possibly help us out with information about who was there and what exactly happened. antioch police say there were several shooters involved at the party and so many as many as 100 people attended, many of them underage. toronto's cousin says she is in shock. it's unthinkable. i would have never thought that a family or party would turn into such a tragic event. and the victims cousin says she heard guests were being patted down
