we run joining me now in the studio for our conversations with great minds tonight is david cobb david walker thank you tom it's a pleasure to be here and to have you with us. a little bit about david cobb first of all. come from there what was your what what was your life like and what brought you into politics in the war well you know tom i was born in rural poverty in this country i'm not embarrassed to say i grew up in a house without a flush toilet in san leon texas and i'll always remember one of the most important lessons that i was taught by my mama she doesn't remember the story but i certainly do i was arguing with my cousin and my brother over a toy and pretty sure it was a car and i'll never forget she got down to our level she calmed down and then she explained there's three of you one two three there's one toy so you can either share it or there are other toys we can bring in but you can't fight over it let's learn to share and you know what tom that made sense to me then it makes sense to me now really all we have to do is treat each other with respect learn how to share

move along if i may citizens united tomorrow is a two year anniversary i just had one conversation david cobb here about it. there's a new survey that just came out it was a small business leaders five hundred small business leaders across america was done by the american sustainable business council the main street alliance and the small business majority these three large organizations as the leading small business organizations in america and what they found of these small business leaders was that eighty eight percent of them held a negative view of the role money plays and paula. sixty eight percent viewed the role of money in politics very negatively and only nine percent have a positive view of the supreme court ruling citizens united so if this thing is hurting small businesses which produce fifty one percent of all the all the employment the united states and seventy one percent of the new public private sector jobs is the time to say no congressionally or something somehow overturned says it's an attitude but you know that comes to me as a bit of a surprise none of those numbers see

this movement to put an end to the bizarre idea that corporations are people and money is speech david cobb joins me for tonight's conversations with great minds and from wisconsin to the halls are.

corporate personhood mean could this be a stepping stone to overturning citizens united all together david cobb joins me now from california he's a spokesperson for move to amend and national projects director of democracy unlimited david welcome back. thank you so much tom it's a pleasure to be back on great to have you with us how can a state supreme court overrule the u.s. supreme court or do they not. in a nutshell this state supreme court can't overrule the u.s. supreme court however what we're seeing is that developing crisis of jurisdiction the citizens united versus federal election case was so outrageous and so inflamed people across the political spectrum that you're seeing a court in bold and in montana by simply saying look this supreme court we're duty bound to follow the supreme court but we're not going to overturn citizens united we're simply going to follow the strict scrutiny test and say that in montana who are state election law citizens united does not require us to overturn our state law i predict that this case will go up to the united states supreme court just as i predi

well is and that's what really represents a very good quick question about joel's campaign when david cobb was running as a green party candidate he said this is two thousand and four election i believe he said if you live in a swing state vote for john kerry don't vote for me there were some people who said that about him david didn't actually do i mean campaigned heavily in wisconsin he spoke to five thousand people fighting in two thousand and four we are campaigning everywhere across the country this campaign you know the reality is voters go to the polls and they will decide on election day or cast their ballots for and we think voters deserve that choice and deserve to have a voice she's running everywhere and we look to be on the ballot across the country then the the lobbying in congress is this is the next step to. be doing this on a state by state basis you know what is next you said you had conversations about was thanks for the document and i don't think the analysis has changed i don't think occupy congress was a new phase in the movement i think with the seventeen in the port
