. >> the state of the economy right now, david cole, the ceo of honeywell, served on the simpson-bowles with the president this week. good to see you, david. and i wonder what you can tell us about the state of the economy right now as the president embarks on a second term. how bullish are you about improving conditions? >> right now, i'm not that bullish at all. in fact, i'd say there's a great uncertainty that's just hanging over the entire economy because we're not confident that our guys can govern anymore. we've got 536 independent contractors all talking about the significance of jobs, but the one thing that they could do that would remove that uncertainty and create this job growth we'd all like, they're not doing. and there's a couple of stumbling blocks. it's not just taxes. we have a significant problem with entitlements. medicare, medicaid in particular. those things need to get resolved together. if we could actually develop a $4 trillion credible market credible plan that would cause everyone out there to say, wow, we can govern again. >> yeah. >> this debt crisis has been

with raising rates at least in the short time and cole is actually giving them a way out of this box short term which is to do the decouple as we heard david refer to on rates and live to fight another day. why is it that more republicans at least at this point not vocalizing same things we have heard from cole, you think? >> republicans are angry with cole up here on capitol hill because the last piece, raising the rates on the last 2% is the last bargaining chip they have and i've talked to many republicans saying privately by the end of the negotiations they may very well have to give on that but they want democrats to come to the table with entitlement reform at least on medicare and they don't want to give up rates until they get that so we're going to see a lot of hand wringing over this cole comment for a couple of days. >> david, there's also hand wringing over what senator dick durbin said in the speech at the center for american progress and we have this, dick durbin, not what he said but didn't say and preparled remarks he said progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of the social secu

david directeder. i think the big news of the day is tom cole.uch influence does tom cole have inside the house republicans among the conservative pragmatists? >> not much. i wouldn't make too much of this other than it's another republican talking about the e idea that we don't have to raise -- we don't have to hold firm on this idea. it's notable because you have somebody going public with the idea that, hey, let's just do what the president wants. but if you're -- correct. if you're looking at it asings oh, he can give people cover, he's going to influence people to change their minds, no. >> but the polling piece -- i heard you say that about him earlier, that's not insignificant. at this point, remember, the polls say overwhelmingly americans will blame republicans if this deal goes down. the president has the wind at his back on this one. so it's -- even if you don't like the politics of it from a pragmatic approach as a republican, i mean, they're negotiating with a hand they do not have. >> and that's what's striking to me. this is a case

. >> david, something else speaker boehner said moments ago, as you know, congressman tom cole broke with most of the rest of republicans saying, look, we should just take the tax breaks for people making under $250,000 a year and worry about the upper-income folks later. john boehner just said no, he doesn't agree with that. what do you think's going to happen here? >> well, the next couple weeks as we begin to sort of lay out these sort of contrasting positions that the president and the speaker have, look, what the spoker's focused on here is, yes, we obviously need to raise more revenue. there's a disagreement in terms between the president and the speaker in terms of how you do that. the speaker's looking at doing things that he believes will not negatively impact the business community, and he thinks what the president is offering will. and so how they work through and resolve that is obviously going to be central to a deal. but there's clearly at this point a disagreement. >> and, steve, on the democrat side, the president is saying he's doing all these meetings and traveling

coles is an exception. and they have a no hassle return policy and accepting items back without anytime women. that will put him in better stead than some of their peers. david have to move things along, but what is on the naughty list? we have two airlines, delta airlines and spirit airlines. >> delta airlines was an interesting case. $250, a message pops up and says, hold on a second, get peace of mind and upgrade your fair to a nonrefundable one. it will only cost you $750. gee, thank you for that. it means makes it sound like an opportune good to refuse. david: and i'm assuming spirit airlines has to do with luggage. >> no doubt. if you want to check a bag, if they have up their rates, if you want to bring a carry-on item on board you can't stuff under the seat in front of you, it can cost you as much as $100 depending upon how much it weighs. lauren: and ticketmaster, $250 to bring your ticket? >> they told us they are working hard to get rid of the fees. we don't have any control over it and it has to do with the venue. but still, the basic policy is $2.50 to print out your own. it would be great if they live up to what they are saying. david: top mark

> first one to you, david, the staffers have told politico that these talks are off to a rough start and issue is, it's the same, the revenue, how to get it. what congressman tom cole said on "jansing and company" yesterday. >> important as to how you get that revenue. i was disappointed to see leader pelosi say it had to be higher rates or nothing. i don't think that's the way you begin a negotiation. >> what about the possibility of keeping the same rates but eliminating deductions for the wealthy in. >> i think that's a good potential suggestion. >> so you hear that, republicans have opened the door to revenue but not by raising taxes. is that going to be enough? might that be the compromised point? >> if you listen to the white house and top democrats it might not be, because they're saying, i think treasury secretary geithner said the other day that's not enough money. president obama starting negotiations at $1.6 trillion in revenues, that's twice as much as the president seemed to agree to two summers ago before the fiscal cliff debt negotiations collapsed with speaker boehner. so i think that's the dividing line right there, whether it's going to be elimina
