cnn's david culver is following the story from shanghai. good to see you, david.cern that selling this experimental covid-19 vaccine to the public without being fully tested could result in negative side effects or worse, and will they be monitoring these people? >> reporter: good to see you as well. you hear the word experimental, and you and i would be uneasy jumping in on getting the vaccine. there's a mix of emotions, hesitation for some but then you have an eagerness a desperation, a determination from others who want this vaccine. they want immunity against covid-19 here, and you've got to understand, this is not about the concerns within china because the reality is here most people are even taking off their masks. life has come back to near normal. it's about leaving china, folks who want to return to international business and education, and for that reason, they are tracking down any opportunity to get this vaccine. they arrived early from all over china, folks lured to the international manufacturing ub of ewu city, specifically to this small community

david culver is joining us live from shanghai. first of all to the reaction to the president's illness. what are the folks in china saying? >> reporter: wolf, from the diplomatic side, you're seeing that even from the top president xi jinping himself, you're seeing refined, even compassionate response. he and his wife extending their others. you have others putting forth well wishes for speedy recovery, thoughts and prayers. we have more critical in state media. one of the state controlled tabloi tabloids here put out a tweet within hours saying this is essentially the price paid for the gamble of down playing covid-19. and he said that this will have an impact on the u.s. election. that is playing in, wolf t, to e rising nationalism in here. that's life coming back to normal here. just a few days ago was the start of golden week. you had millions of people traveling for this holiday, celebratory mood here that marks the people's republic of china and the mid-autumn festival. people are traveling in a bubble of safety and security

cnn's david culver is in beijing for us. he joins us now live. good to see you, david.f course as we mentioned, the aim is to test 9 million people in a matter of days. how are they even able to pull off such a massive operation and what are the results so far. >> hey there, rosemary, good to see you as well. it's a city larger than new york population wise. they are looking to do this over the course of five days. we know as of now, day screened some 3 million people as you mentioned. of that, a million test results have come back, according to the government there, with negative results. all together they're saying about a handful of confirmed cases, asymptomatic ones on top of that. aside from that, it's something we have seen play out before. wuhan, for example, earlier in the summer, they like wise had city wide testing. 12 million residents, here in beijing, they had a good portion of the city undergo mandatory testing and screening, so as to determine whether or not a cluster outbreak was being contained. i think the real concern overall, though, is what numbers
