joining me now, the reporter behind that skoop, david fahrenthold.just from renting to the secret service. can you walk me through how these costs compare to other presidents? is there any limit on what trump can charge? >> there's no limit on what he can charge. the secret service is allowed to pay whatever they need to to be near the people they're protecting. for trump, since he goes to his own properties and stays there, that means they're going to be near him and they need to rent space from him at mar-a-lago in the winter and at bedminster in the summer. he can charge whatever he wants and in this case he's chosen to charge $400 a night at mar-a-lago. you ask what other ex-presidents have done this, as far as i can tell no other ex-presidents can have charged their protectors. the total spend joe biden got over seven years was equal to what trump charged the government during his first month as president. >> not exactly apples to apples. how is the new york indictment affecting trump's finances at large? >> well, the trump administration is alr

we so there really is this reliance on donations, as we david fahrenthold is doing some fantastic worke election -- with >> david, this is tricky though, when donald trump's biggest business is raising for and running elections. >> i think the biggest business as the trump organization as it's constituted doesn't make sense with donald trump's constitution. it has his name, why would people would go with two his hotels. you can capitalize his -- keeping the properties -- we selling t-shirts. that's the business that could sustain itself. the problem, is the businesses that aren't working, like the hotels and some of the gulf resorts, those are the ones that have the huge loans on them. so it's gonna be hard to just cast them off and focus on what's working. that's gonna be his dilemma for the next couple of years. >> and in response to a reporter and march when talking about these business is not doing well specifically the hotel business, we david cay johnston trump does say, i'm very under leveraged, it's good, it's hurting me, but it's hurting everyone else as well. i mean he's sayi

joining our conversation is david fahrenthold and marketing and branding expert, our dear friend donnyke over the last five years has always come into play whenever trump or his company have been scrutinized in a criminal context and that is intent. the existence of two sets of books, one that makes clear they were knowingly defrauding the irs seems to show the intent of their tax filings. >> talking to tax law experts, that's what makes this a strong case. you don't have to wonder about trump's intent, did they know what they were doing, did they understand the tax law. they set it out there. we're going to make a record of how much allen weisselberg is supposed to be paid and subtract out all the free apartments, free cars, free tuition for his grandkids. we'll subtract that out. whatever that adds up to, we'll subtract that from his salary and only pay taxes on the rest. the fact that they have done that shows prosecutors how much money they avoided telling the irs about and the fact that they hid it shows intent, that they knew it was wrong and wanted to height it. >> donny, my dog

. >> david fahrenthold has been covering this story for years. david, thanks so much.ents. we may know later this afternoon when they're unsealed. what are you expecting to see? >> well, based on reporting, if this was a case where this was taxable fringe benefits that went unrecorded and that gave benefit to the cfo and the organization then there are two things to glean. number one, thatgalactically clumsy for the cfo to not know that they were fringe benefits. you would need a car that was free with the advertisement on the side that is only used for business, occasionally personal use and even then that may be a taxable fringe benefit. if it's a late model cadillac you that just drive whenever you want, that's definitely a taxable fringe benefit. so there's that portion of it. the other thing to tnk about in the world of tax prosecution, in many thousands of cases brought a tiny fraction of those are tax fraud cases. within that, i'm not sure there were any taxable fringe benefit cases brought in federal court last year. still looking, the data just came out very r
