joining me, john king and david gergen.ohn, when congress bachmann says her decision has nothing to do with the questions about her presidential campaign or what would likely be a tough re-election campaign, how believable is that? >> to borrow a phrase from bill clinton, that dog won't hunt. now, on the one part, she can say it's about something else and she can say, anderson, truthfully, that this is exhausting. when you run for president, then come back into congress, that she's tired. she can say and she might even have convinced herself it doesn't have anything directly to do with those things, but here's a key fact. number one, she won by fewer than 5,000 votes last time. a lot of people, including a lot of her republican friends, thought she was going to lose this time. the democrats have a long-shot chance of taking back the house. guess what? the republicans win today by having michele bachmann step aside. that is probably the most republican district in the state of minnesota. she was perhaps, many republicans bel

david gergen worked in both the reagan white house and bill clinton's white house. he's now at harvard. michael gerson. you've seen controversies in your time in washington. we had this i.r.s. thing. we got the leaks investigation, all of the stuff going on. how do you think the white house has been handling it? >> not well but i do think it has to be put in context, bob. give them credit on one point and that is overall when you look back over the five years this administration has been clean and free of scandals and i think they deserve credit for that. having said that now that these events have come up it's been a surprise. we all think the obama people do a superb job running the campaign but when it comes to running the government they can be so ham fisted. it boggle it is mind sometimes. on these recent controversies, as you call them-- and you and i have seen a lot of-- and they don't amount to watergate or iran-contra. but they're important. the government mishandled it in allowing these things to take place on the i.r.s. front and allowing things to take p

you remember the iconic moment for scott brown is when david gergen said this is kennedy's seat. there was a third candidate in the republican primary that finished last with 13% who is a sharp, quick whited, creative guy. if you could put his personality in gomez, you would really have a candidate. in terms of markey being in trouble, it rises on does the entrenched d.c. status, 36 years in congress, that kind of thing, really not living in molden and living in the beltway, does that rile up the voters, in a way. i think it's possible, not likely. i look at coakley and talk about the terrible campaign she ran. it was the height of the battle and why it captured the public's interest. the public looked at her. it doesn't work. the public, if it never reached that level of interest because of health care, she would have won. >> part of the reason is tea party groups and conservative groups decided to make scott brown their vehicle at a time they needed one. they found it in him. we'll see if that sort of same dynamic can play out with gabriel gomez. i don't see it but i don't alwa

congressional correspondent, dana bash, jessica yellin, gloria borger and senior political analyst david gergen. dana, let me start with you. the resignation of the acting irs commissioner came out quickly after the audit was released yesterday. what do we know? >> that's right it came really quickly, there was so much outrage, so many unsatisfied republicans and democrats with the inspector general for not assigning blame and wrongdoing with the irs. they knew heads needed to roll. that's obvious for a lot of reasons tonight. not the least of which how much they wanted to make a statement. they put the president out there making a statement and then they released a letter to steven miller explaining why he had to go to restore public trust. steven miller seems to be the guy who was fired for several reasons. first of all, he's only the acting commissioner now, but he was the number two, and we learned this week he was told about targeting tea party and other groups a year ago. and he never disclosed that to members of congress who were investigating this very thing. he didn't tell. he didn't d
