david gergen, this is pretty significant. we just got this filing.is bail, that's significant. revoking his bail, the him allegations and we have only had a chance to scan pages of this 90 page report briefing. after being charged with federal crimes he has committed new crimes that is the allegation byitness tampering, and that's a serious charge. you go to jail for a long time and if it is witness tampering, it suggests there is a huge cover up. we don't know if this touches on the president. way too early to tell. but this briefing suggests there were at least three or four people involved in the witness tampering. >> gates, who is manafort's right-hand person has already made a deal. his former son-in-w has also made a deal. certainly a lot of folks lined up against manafort who are cooperating with mueller. >> there are. and he has been under pressure to cooperate as well. and i haven't had a chance to look at this document as well, but we have to look at it in the context of everything we are seeing play out in the public domain. in other words

let's talk about all this with david gergen, cnn's senior political analyst and a former white house adviser to four past presidents. david, this is now week two. the white house has gotten incredibly bad headlines. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have come out condemning this policy that's leading to the deportation and the separation of parents and children, some saying they're appalled by what they are saying. the president had to cave. he signed that executive order. what did trump gain from all of this? >> well, i think had he not signed the executive order and this weekend we were still talking about children being separated out he would have had a very heavy blow not only to his presidency but to prospects for the midterm, which he clearly has very much in his mind as he goes through this. what's now becoming an ordeal. having acted, i think he lightened the load some, ana, but overall the confusion that has surrounded the aftermath of signing that executive order, the sheer incompetence the government has had so far in telling us exactly where these kids are, where the pa

all of this bringing me to where else cnn senior political analyst david gergen and political commentatorrt. my intro to you doesn't follow nor does what this briefing was supposed to be about and what the president actually ended up talking about, you guys. i wonder what you think, joe, especially considering the seriousness of what this should have been. the president did not address what is now believed to be the true death toll of hurricane maria in puerto rico as we understand it, it's almost 5,000 but the official toll is 64. what do you think about that? >> i think it gives you a window into the president's character. remember, when he first came into office he went to the intelligence community, the cia that he had criticized roundly during the campaign and went in as a moment where they could make peace and he talked about the electoral college and how many states he won and critiqued hillary clinton's campaign and strategy. so it's pure narcissism, so that isn't surprising. it really, though, underlines the scandal, though, of fema, the administration and our response to puerto
