outfront now, cnn senior political analyst, david gergen, a former advisor to four u.s.ev several times. david, thank you so much for being here tonight. let's just start with how you think the world will remember him. >> i think a lot depends whether you're a russian, american, or european. i think he will be seen as a towering figure who helped to end the cold war and permitted freedom to spread in eastern europe and has always looked back on what gorbachev did. that's what liberated so much of europe. so there was a lot about that that the americans came to appreciate, that the europeans came to appreciate, but the russian people did not agree with that. and for them, there have been many hardships that they still experience. gorbachev did not bring the end of the battle with the west. it continued from the point of view of the soviets. and i think at the end of the day if you ask that question, who ended the cold war, many historians will say gorbachev ended the cold war. from an american perspective, someone who was obviously biased, i must tell you that i think rea

. >> david gergen is a senior u.s. analyst. i spoke to him earlier about what this means for joe biden. take a listen. >> joe biden has been on a roller coaster the last several months, in fact, for monday of his political life. he's down, up, sharply down and comes back up. it's very striking to watch and yes, it could be a game changer. i think it's too early to tell for sure. it's important to remember that when big things happen, especially good news happens, sometimes what happens is not a leading indicator. it's a lagging indicator. it takes weeks, if not months sometimes, for changes especially in the economic sphere to work their way through the system so that a president gets credit for it. usually when things are bright for a president economically, it takes three to six months for the president to realize those assets, political assets. so biden has had a terrible, terrible lead-in to this, but he had a terrific run in the last few weeks. some would say it's one of the most important, significant runs since lyndon jo

david gergen, thank you as always for talking with us. >>> a cease-fire between israel and islam and jihad is now in effect in gaza, and appears to be holding at this hour. that truce coming two days after a dramatic escalation in tensions began. when israel launched what it called preemptive strikes on islamic jihad targets. before the cease-fire was announced on sunday, palestinian militants launched rockets toward jerusalem, following israeli airstrikes in gaza overnight. israeli officials say a leader of islamic jihad operations in southern gaza was killed in an airstrike in roth, he was the second militant commander killed in the israeli operation. palestinian officials say at least 44 militants and civilians have been killed, including 15 children. u.s. president joe biden praised the cease-fire and thanked officials for helping to broker it. journalist elliott god can joins us now, live, from southern israel. good to see you. what is the latest on the seat cease-fire that's in effect? >> reporter: the cease-fire is holding, it officially was meant to come into effect at 11:30

i want to bring in retired lieutenant general mark hurting and david gergen.entlemen, for coming in on this very busy friday afternoon. general hertling, i want to start with you. you have a lot of experience dealing with material at the highest security and classification levels. some of these documents were marked top secret, sci. which is, of course, the highest level of classification and could presumably include materials about nuclear weapons, as "the washington post" is reporting. is there any normal process where materials like this would be in a private residence, even in the private residence of a former president? >> none whatsoever, dana. i will say that emphatically. it belongs in a scif facility, under the control of what's called an sso, a special security officer. they track the documents. they know where they are. that's probably why they knew that mr. trump had absconded with some of them when he went to mar-a-lago and didn't give them back. so yeah, there is no way that these belong in the private hands of any individual, even a former presi
