joining us now in washington, david gregory, host of "meet the press." vid, this is quite the setback, not only for chicago, but certainly for the president and the whole team from the white house that made the last-minute bid. >> well, you heard from the president and in his bid, in his attempt saying that he is putting the full weight of the white house and the state department behind getting these games. behind making a poesh olympic games in chicago a success. so, there's no question, there was a lot of political muscle, the most political muscle you can muster, frankly, as well as entertainment muscle with oprah winfrey brought to bear in this fight and it did not work out. the president was criticized for putting so much political capital on the line and distracting himself as some have alleged from other priorities right now to do this. i don't know that it was a huge distraction, the president was able to focus on other matters, as well, including afghanistan. nevertheless, there is the issue of presidential prestige and it didn't bear out and one

moderator david gregory talked to susan rice, the u.s.mbassador to the u.n., and he asked if the afghanistan war is a, quote, war of necessary, as the president has said, why would he not immediately granlts the wishes of the commanders there? here's the response. >> we have put in place 21,000 additional troops. they are still completing their deployment. we have increased the number of civilians and we've increased the financial resources to to afghanistan and pakistan substantially. the president has commander in chief has to look at more than what is happening in a single theater. he has to look at what is necessary to to advance our goal of defeating al qaeda globally. >> i'm joined live from washington by democrat he can strategist and a republican strategyist. good to see you. peter, i'll begin with you. what else is the president weighing when deciding whether or not to send the troops that the commanders want? >> i think ambassador rice laid it out. there are a lot of different factors here and complicated by the fact that now th

here with us now, the moderator of nbc's "meet the press," david gregory. we have just determined the president can multitask and his eye won't be off the ball if he goes to copenhagen. what is the headline pertaining to afghanistan? is there anything new in terms of how we move forward? >> well, general mcchrystal, who was addressing an audience in london before he met up with the president, has made it very clear that that assessment he provided to the administration is something he stands by. he does not want to scale down efforts and focus on al qaeda. this is the subject of debate between the president's top advisers, the war council on afghanistan. here you've got the president meeting with general mcchrystal, getting additional face time with him to talk through these issues, and i'm told by senior officials that really we're looking at a period of a few weeks to work out this policy difference, a profound policy difference for the president to decide exactly which direction he wants to move in. >> okay. the other big story, the major talks taking pl
