david gregory, let's begin with you.garding this finance bill this weekend. >> is it? >> "meet the press," you'll have shelby and dodd. is it going to be a big fat nothing burger or are you going to get them to fight? >> i think it's actually getting close to being resolved. what's interesting here, we can talk about derivatives and some of the fine points. the bigger piece of this is the fight over the role of government because, you know, you have the excesses of the financial system, kind of unfettered capitalism. and then a bigger government role of regulation and oversight and the potential for getting taxpayers backs involved. i mean, this is still really what this fight is about. and, yet this anti-establishment mood in the country is such that i think there's going to be more bipartisan agreement to hold wall street in check because if you're republicans and you want to get tea partiers in the mix, nobody's happy with big institutions. you know, these charges against goldman sachs, people -- what's interesting ab

we've got nbc's david gregory, the moderator of "meet the press," who's got more on this. david, good morning. bipartisan negotiations are still going on, yet the senate majority leader harry reid has scheduled a vote for 5:00 p.m. on monday. are the democrats trying to push the republicans on this one? trying to push them to make a decision? >> no doubt about it. they don't want to have any more of what they see as delays from republicans to try to build opposition to this bill. they want to force the issue. democrats i poke to sspoke to s learned a lesson from health care, "we are not going to let the party of no continue to block this." the president on wall street made a closing arguments and now democrats want to force the issue because they think frankly they're close on this and they may have republicans who come across the aisle. >> if they're close on this, then what happened? if i'm not mistaken, a week ago republicans were saying this is the bill of endless bailouts. now it seems they've moved closer, what's happened behind the scenes, or is this perhaps the s.e.

it's likely, david, they're going to have to be clearer -- so many davids on this set here. gregory here, to suggest this engagement thing is not working to some extent, i think -- >> let me go a little larger and talk about presidential leadership and put it in the political context. there is an opposition party and the republicans are trying to figure out how to mount that opposition as we're in an election year. there was a gatherings of republicans, southern republican leadership conference. you heard two prominent republican voices, newt gingrich and sarah palin talking about how republicans position themselves to counter president obama. let's watch that. >> what the left wants to do is say we're the party of no. here is what i want to ask you to encourage every candidate you know, every incumbent you know, every staff person you know, every consultant you know. i think we should decide that we're going to be the party of yes. >> there is no shame in being the party of no if they're proposing, the other side is proposing an idea that violates our values, violates or conscience
