for more we're joined by david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." david, good evening to you. seeing the president celebrating the deal by greeting tourists today makes you wonder if you weren't watching the first campaign stop of his re-election campaign. does the white house see the president as the ultimate winner in this showdown? >> well, they may, but i think it's a little early to start crowning any winners out of a situation that leaves a lot of americans disgusted with washington. and that's on all sides of this. the president was at the lincoln memorial talking about cooperation between republicans and democrats in congress. i don't think this is really a great model of cooperation. coming precariously close to shutting down the government, endangering pay for our soldiers who are fighting in afghanistan and iraq. over tens of billions of dollars and big ideological policy differences when, as mike talks about, next year's budget, dealing with huge issues like entitlement spending, the differences are much wider, both ideologically and the numbers are so much bigger.

david gregory is moderator of "meet the press" and joins us this morning. we haven't had a gop candidate to talk about yet and now we seem to have a couple of names floating out there. i guess the flashiest at this point would be donald trump. he was the headline speaker at a tea party event in boca, where he's talked recently that he's going to make an announcement about whether he'll run or not in june. in the meantime, he's racking up a lot of support. a recent poll shows donald trump as the favorite among other republican potential candidates. so i guess the question would be, how electable is donald trump at this point? >> i don't think he's being viewed very seriously at this point. but he is making some headway in these polls as you point out. part of that is he's got name recognition. he's gotten money. and he's out there talking in a way that is attention-seeking and attention-grabbing. whether he's talking about the president's birth certificate, which is a settled issue, or talking about him being the worst president of the united states, so he's

. >> nbc's david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> the president has listened to people talk about this issue, bemused and puzzled. he talked about the real issues and says we can't deal them if we're dealing with sideshows and carnival barkers. has he laid it to rest? >> people who are inclined to believe they may find some conspiracy angle here to keep this thing going, but i know from talking to people inside the white house there was a view it had finally gotten too much traction. why? you look at our own polling and cbs' as well recently shows 45% of republicans, 45% believe the president was born outside the country. donald trump in this split screen this morning doing a press conference in new hampshire taking credit for keeping this issue alive and forcing him to release this birth certificate. so all of this had led the white house to believe, look, this is going too far. we had to put an end to it. they had to get a special waiver from the state of hawaii, i'm told, in order to

david warren was sentenced to 25 years, and gregory mcrae received a 17-year sentence. warren shot henry glover outside a new orleans strip mall, and mcrae later burned a car with glover's body in it. the two men are among 20 officers charged last year with crimes committed in the storm's aftermath. ireland's banks need an extra $34 billion to survive the financial crisis. that was determined after independent banking experts and the irish central bank t four banks through stress tests. and it brings the total bailout to nearly $100 billion. we have a report from faisal islam of independent television news. >> banks will be americaned, shut and shrunk, leaving just two remaining financial groups. bank of ireland and allied irish banks. the extra black hole came about after another set of stress tests for the health of the irish financial system run by the central bank governor. it revealed likely future losses of tens of billions of euros, that money likely to come from an already cash strapped irish state. >> analysts will make their own calculations and i suppose the
