david gregory, your reaction? >> it's a significant step. obviously it's unprecedented. so much has been unprecedented about donald trump's presidency. my suspicion at this point is that it will be largely symbolic. i haven't seen any indication that the senate would, you know, move with the house to go to an impeachment trial, but i think the -- that mitch mcconnell wouldn't do that and they wouldn't have those votes anyway, but i think what is significant about it is that democrats want to go on record historically as having opposed the president and called out his unconstitutional actions for what they are on january 6th, and secondly they want to demonstrate for the historical record that there would be republicans who would vote to support that and that would be significant even if it's relatively a small number on the house side. >> yes. in fact, that's what's different. that's what makes this impeachment different. susan, we just heard from senator ben sasse a republican who said he would be open to this. listen. >> the house, if they come together and have a proc

joining us now, we have cnn analyst david gregory and susan glasser. david, i want to start with you, four years ago today, you and i were together for donald trump's inauguration. we were sitting on those risers, high atop pennsylvania avenue, watching all of the ceremony of that inauguration. this year, it's obviously much different. every level, visually, symbolically, stylistically, security wise, on every level and so back then, of course, we didn't know what to expect. we could never have predicted what to expect. what are your thoughts this morning on what you see ahead? >> well, just incredible sadness, for one, that we are in a washington, d.c. with 25,000 national guard troops. if that's what our inauguration day is like, that we do not -- well, i should say, we have fear about a peaceful transfer of power. i just think for our country, that is such a low moment. such a sad moment. and it's compounded by the grief and the loss that we're still feeling all around the country, marked by the commemoration last night of 400,000 lost by the pandemi

let's bring in the great mirnds, david gregory and stewart stevens. good to see you both. what was the play for these guys today, david, in terms of making this vote and making this go away? >> well, i think it was to make a process argument. not even those who are sympathetic to trump or afraid of trump want to excuse what he's done. they don't want to see a full airing of the evidence that supports what we all saw with our own eyes and his role but they want to argue that it's not constitutional and then i think mcconnell, this is just a pragmatic play here. p put himself out there. hitting the president very, very hard. president trump very hard. but nothing came of that. ur you know? we were talking about that the day he did it. that's the reality. that's the reality he's living by. so he doesn't want to take it any furtherer and the votes aren't there. that's the bottom line so that's the tension right now, is doing something that will be symbolic to mark the record for history of what happened versus already knowing you won't get the outcome you seek. >> how do you fe

. >> david gregory is with me as well. you have covered so many administrations, david. few moments of the biden presidency, right? as the president and vice president have gone in those doors, of course, we'll see them again with all the pomp and circumstance tonight and these executive orders coming momentarily. what are these first few moments like? >> well, a lot of it is just organization. and because the transition was really undermined by the outgoing administration, this administration has to do more, faster, and play catch-up. we talked about that with cabinet officials not being in place. congress has to work on that, the senate has to work on that. you have acting secretaries that have to get into place. what they have built up is this pandemic response and infrastructure and we'll see a focus on a lot more federal coordination with the states, vaccine rollout being the most important thing. you'll see -- i think this -- the president and the vice president are going to spend some time projecting a new u.s. image around the world. i think that will be importan

david gregory and michael smerconish join us right now. how do you look at the moment, david? >> well, i think it's a hopeful moment. you know? i think the country is starved for leadership, for compassion from our president, for a respect for the presidency. and there is an urgent need for action. on this pandemic, in the economy, the country is hurting and the country feels isolated. that's why i really liked the notes that president-elect biden sounded today and tonight and what he'll do tomorrow. to remind each other that we are connected to each other. i think about martin buober who wrote "i and thou" the idea is to be in an i and thou relationship is what happens to you matters to me and vice versa and a sense of community that we need in the country if we're going through something really hard. we're going through lots of things that are really hard including overcoming these trump years. so i think the moment is defined by the man. this incoming president. and kamala harris, the woman who will offer some hope and some direction because we need government and we need a
