i'm david gura in pittsburgh, pennsylvania.nt trump last night in murfreesboro, illinois. that was president trump last night at a campaign rally saying that the gunman who opened fire in a synagogue should pay the ultimate price. last night, the district attorney of pennsylvania filed 29 charges against the suspect. we are moments away from learning more about those charges. a news conference is scheduled to begin at 9:00 eastern time. but according to a statement from the attorney general, jeff sessions, those charges could lead to the death penalty. i want to bring in jeff jarvis now, he's a blogger and katie bennery is with me as well who covers the justice department for "the new york times." katie, let me start with you and ask you about the rhetoric we've heard from the president, from the vice president, from the attorney general over these last 24 hours. some of the first comments we've heard from the president of the united states at joint base andrews yesterday centered on this. he was responding to a question from a

nbc's david gura is live in pittsburgh. david, what are some of the charges against bowers? >> yeah, 11 charges of murder in that federal criminal complaint along with 11 charges of trying to obstruct celebration of religious beliefs, that is on which the federal government is pursuing the hate crimes charge that you mentioned just a moment ago. in addition to the federal complaint, there is a state complaint as well, 30 charges there. all of this a culmination of the work that law enforcement has done so far, the investigations that have taken place so far. there have been searches of the suspect's house, of his vehicle. yesterday, at a news conference, the u.s. attorney for the western district of pennsylvania highlighted the work that law enforcement had done since saturday. >> i want to commend the courageous police officers and s.w.a.t. teams who responded to the scene. they are truly heroes, who without hesitation, without concern for their own safety, ran toward gunfire to protect innocent victims. by confronting and neutralizing bowers, they prevented additional loss
