essay months that david vera gets fleet sailed past jackson and captured the crescent city of new orleans. there was a lot looking up in the western theater. but the population centers, the political capitals, all of the media attention, it was fixated and focused on that all- important eastern theater. in that eastern theater, of course as we have tracked over the last three weeks, you know the story. it was defeat, it was retreat, it was stalemate. for the federal forces. heading out, falling back, digging in. the war in the east had become a worrisome sequence of movements and motions. none of which seemed to add up to anything larger or exert influence on the progress of arms. these defeats and the harrowing losses, the staggering casualties they inflicted, they sapped morale on the northern homefront. as it was, of course, and as we have discussed over the course of this semester, north and south were deeply divided over the meaning and purpose of this war. newspapers were teeming with descriptions of the deadly and destructive capacity of this conflict. they were deeply disquieted.
