panel here, joining me now, former democratic congresswoman and msnbc contributor donna edwards and david jolly, former republican congressman and msnbc political analyst. i was speaking to david plouffe a little bit earlier and he's obviously very used to the former president having worked for him, essentially. but i got to say, as i was watching him speak today, on behalf of terry mcauliffe, campaigning on his behalf, i thought to myself, man, it looks like he sure as heck missed the campaign trail, getting out there today for him. donna edwards, give me your reaction so far as to what we heard from the former president. >> well, i think it was sort of vintage obama. he is a classic organizer, and i think that, you know, his goal was to try to meet voters where they are and to communicate that although this is a virginia election, this is a national election. he was effectively, i think, able to connect what is happening nationally to what's going on in virginia and to demonstrate to people the difference between glenn youngkin, who's wrapped himself up in the former president donald trump, a

we are witnessing the case where -- >> david jolly froze. eaking news and we'll get david back to react to this. the select committee investigating january 6th has just this hour subpoenaed mr. jeffrey clark. i'll read from the letter. the select committee needs to understand all the details but efforts inside the previous administration to delay the certification of the 2020 election and amplifying this information about the election results. we need to understand mr. clark's role and learn who was involved. the select committee expects mr. clark to cooperate fully with our investigation. just to remind our viewers, mr. clark was the doj official with whom donald trump has become very close. there was a plan for mr. clark to replace acting attorney general rosen, who replaced mr. barr. if mr. rosen didn't go along with donald trump's plot, plan, to overturn the election results. we learned a lot of that from the interim report. just days later now, the subpoena for jeffrey clark to provide testimony to the select committee investigating the

david jolly is here. how do you get rid of kevin mccarthy?ke it happen but there's something that i'm going to say up front here. realistically, there are some members on this list that are in super safe districts that they're going to be very hard to defeat, but in the case of kevin mccarthy and steve scalise, the reason why we put them on this list is because what we think needs to happen is we need to deny them a republican majority. it's pretty unlikely we get mccarthy and scalise of the folks on that list out of congress, but at a minimum, we need to keep them out of the house majority. now, what i'll say is that when we look at what republican leaders in congress are doing to police their own ranks, we see them completely missing in action. so, kevin mccarthy and steve scalise have done a very poor job of policing madison caw thorn and marjorie taylor greene and these extremist members of congress and so what we're doing, a group of former republican governors, senators, congressmen, cabinet secretary, we've got a former leader of the r

david jolly said, this seems to be the strategy.ter ideas. this seems to be the way to keep elections is to keep people you don't like from voting. >> you just -- not that i needed it, but you just made the filibuster sound even more obstructive and heinous than i already think it is. why are democrats not united in filibuster reform to preserve the right to vote, to preserve the right to have votes counted? this is the republican strategy, and i don't believe that you're actually surprised that republicans don't want anything to do with voting rights legislation. are you? >> i'm not surprised, no. i'm not surprised because there really hasn't been any outreach. the compromise bill that we worked out over the summer has been around for more than a month. nobody's come forward with a counterproposal, or, hey, we could maybe do this. the reservation, nicole, is that this is a double-edged sword. right now, the filibuster is being used to obstruct. it could be used in the future to deconstruct important legislation and there would be n

maya rocky more cummings and congressman from florida and msnbc political analyst david jolly. david, i'll start with you voters will head to the poll on tuesday across the country. there are two governor races we're watching very closely. in virginia, it looks like a virtual tie between democrat terry mcauliffe and republican glenn youngkin. with youngkin up less than 1% according to the real clear politics polling average. in new jersey, incumbent phil murphy is holding on on to nine percentage points over his republican challenger. but let's remember, this is a state joe biden won by nearly 16 points in 2020. what are you expecting to see on tuesday night? >> it appears phil murphy is very safe and we're coming out of the dynamics of the covid environment, phil murphy was one of those governs that took a strong leadership role. so i think voters -- it is telling that voters are going to likely reward him with another term. virginia's different. virginia is a big deal. we'll see what it turns out. largely it will be a momentum play for either party. how far it turns out, that

joe crowley, thanks david jolly. >>> we have breaking news from the supreme court on that controversialms with details. >> they've taken challenges on sb 8 that banned abortion on six weeks of pregnancy. the courtological hear a straight-up challenge to the constitutionality of this law. that's the lawsuit that was provided by abortion providers in texas. that's the case that the supreme court declined in early september, to act on, to put it on hold. so the supreme court is now saying it will hear that case november 1st. so it's acting with amazing speed here. it's going to hear a constitutional challenge to texas' sb8 on november 1. and on the same day, the supreme court will also hear that the federal government has brought against sb8. and the question in that case is not so much the constitutionality of the law, but the question of whether the federal government even has the legal right to sue texas over the law. the question that it's limited to is this one. may the u.s. bring suit in federal government and obtain injunctive or relief against the judges, state court clerks or offi
