former florida representative david jolly, eugene daniels back with us. where are we on this deal? >> at this point, it seems like this for -- there might be a meeting for tuesday. things could change. at this point, it's very unclear how the sides are coming together. these kinds of negotiations, both sides need to be able to go back to the, base back to the voters, back home and be able to, say we got x out of this deal. we thought we would have a meeting friday. that meeting was canceled, which is not always a bad thing. congress know better than me, but sometimes it means and that the staff level are hammering things out. looks like we might have a meeting on tuesday with the principles. that means we might be moving forward and will be able to find something. i will say that biden administration has been clear that they don't want to tie the debt limit and the spending cuts together, but that they are willing to talk about it. seems very possible that they have two different bills, so everybody can go home and say what they did they were going to do.

joining us now is joe yucava and congressman david jolly. can you break down what the laws were?governor signed. first is sv 254, which is the measure that will ban gender affirming care for minors in the state and considered one of the most extreme in the country because it would allow the state to take custody of kids whose parents are providing them with gender-affirming care like hormone therapy. there is also another bill that will expand what advocates have called the don't say gay bill. and that prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grades. and this new law will expand that through eighth grade and will also limit reproductive health education in sixth through 12th grades. and there are two other bills. an adult live performance bill that will restrict drag performances. >> so, david, and, you know, all this is happening as we're getting this reporting that he's going to be entering the governor of florida the presidential race starting next week. politically, i mean, this is just one of a series of pieces of legislat

david jolly is a former republican congressman for florida and an msnbc political analyst. guess is one of these because where you don't miss being in congress. and i want you to tell me as someone who has been through this process, you have nbc news reporting for president biden, the speaker mccarthy just spoke on the phone in the last hour. how much of this gets done by those negotiators around the table that we watch -- walking into the capitol in their speakers to duke it all out and how much of the work actually gets done when the president and the speaker on the phone? >> it's a matter of sequence, alicia, and look, my first that lead mitch as a staffer was raising it from 4.7 trillion to 5.1 trillion. we're now in the 30. so i have been through a lot of these, i'll tell you what we are seeing now are the principal's negotiating joe biden and kevin mccarthy. this could go a lot of different directions but i would say what to look for is this, joe biden and kevin mccarthy clearly, inevitably, will have to reach some type of compromise. the republican conference does no

. >> david jolly, i don't see there's a single republican running against the very unpopular positionsn and abortion. what is the national conversation against anyone politician who stands against the 85% on those two issues? >> i think this is where we need to embrace this. republicans like to have their own culture wars around issue of immigration and lgbt issues. why not one around the safety of our own kids. make that a defining issue and give people a sideways look if they don't support greater gun violence reform. ultimately the safety of our children and communities come down not to the culture wars on the right, but this issue, and this issue alone. i have always been moved by the words that fred schafer with me the very first time we met, several months after parkland, when i went up to you in los angeles and said i want to thank you for what you're doing. as fred shared history with me, it ended with him saying i wish i had done something sooner. we all nose fred's heart in this movement, but those are words for us across the country. sooner is right now, to defeat republican
