joining me now is for commerce man, david jolly and former congress woman donna edwards, both are msnbc political analysts . donna, what do these new poll numbers tell you about the state of the race and about voter enthusiasm? do you think we are seeing a convention bounce for harris or could there be more to come? >> it is more than that. i think since vice president harris got into this race, the level of enthusiasm, particularly among democrats, and independents, has been growing. i think the convention, one speaker after another, including the vice president acknowledged the this is going to be a close race. i think that is the way they are approaching the campaign, which is very smart. and, it says to me that voters are taking a look at the harris candidacy for they are comparing it to donald trump and they are making more affirmative decisions about supporting the vice president and governor walz. i think that this is going to be a close race. we've always known that. and, i think the vice president's campaign is approaching this just like that. >> david, trump is resorting to hi

david jolly is msnbc political analyst and here in studio, julie rabeinsky, co-founder of the non-profitlift our voices. david, we know donald trump hates to lose maybe even more than most people, so does he think he's not hurting his cause, that he knows best? what's happening here? >> chris, the vanities of donald trump have always been something that raises eyebrows and he can certainly repulse. i genuinely think the last three weeks have been one of the worst chapter of a presidential campaign in modern political history. it's that bad and it's because of the candidate. they could have done more to with vice president harris and the ads about to drop making her soft on crime, hitting her on immigration or as a prosecutor and in some ways they missed that opportunity and the candidate himself seems incapable of prosecuting any case. right now vice president harris has won the right direction-wrong direction conversation with voters and donald trump needs to make this race about a hard contrast of ideology, but he's really incapable of doing that as we saw at the rnc convention and at

and joining us former republican congressman david jolly of florida. t republicans because you yourself have been a down ballot republican at one time or another. what do you think about how they're feeling tonight about their leader? >> yeah, the last time i was a down ballot republican i was on the ballot with donald trump in 2016. let me tell you how hard this is. here is the problem. it's not just donald trump completely incapable of articulating an agenda or continuing to be listless and transactionally on the agenda. but down ballot republicans don't really have an agenda either. this is also a cycle where house republicans have nothing to take to the american people. on virtually everything piece of legislation of national consequence. from raising the debt ceiling to keeping the government open, to funding the stop putin's march against europe. it is a majority of democratic votes in the house not republicans that actually led the governing coalition. it's truly one of the worse presidential campaigns we've seen in history. republicans don't hav

david jolly is a former republican -- congressman from florida. let me start with you.int. the top of the ticket matters a lot, the distinction we were seeing between senate candidates and the top ticket, no one thought that was probably going to last. what does it look like for these marquee statewide races now from your perspective? >> always good to be back with you, chris. i will pull out a few quick things. one, the vibes are starting to reveal themselves in all of the polling data. we are seeing it as a grassroots movement. there are 400 action teams being created, 25 upticks in our canvassing shifts. so just to say, the vibes are translating to action and then two, when you look at senate races like in ohio and arizona, we have a couple things in common. one, we have great senate candidates and we have states have electorates that have a commitment, a passion around abortion rights and have fought for those rights and are going to continue to fight for them all the way to the ballot. now we just have more options. now the ballot from top to bottom can interact in
