i think what david jolly was saying it's a question of whether they can get there.nd that power vacuum and probably turn into a messy fight if donald trump weighs in and there's blood in the water for mike johnson, so i think that is just one of those big questions and we will wait to see if that happens over the next week and a half or so. >> and then we have the element of elon musk and the fact that there is perhaps a shadow speaker of the house. >> elon musk, you know, trump really knows how the federal government works a lot better than elon musk. i do think, look, mike johnson serves at the pleasure of donald trump. donald trump was the person who helped him get that speakership, but the people who have helped him pass legislation have been democrats, so it's a very small majority, it'll be even smaller in the next congress, and so he's not going to be able to pass things without democrats, so even if it ends up being a jim jordan, that jim jordan is going to have to build consensus and that's a problem. >> what are you hearing from democrats about this sense

joining me, the former republican congressman from florida david jolly and molly jong-fast. friday night is when the vote will be. i say friday night because last time with kevin mccarthy it was all week, all day, all night until the 15th vote. what do you sense will happen at this point? >> it's a great question. you ménchen the razor's edge. it comes down to numbers. what is different in the resistance to make junction as it's not organized and it's not a leader. weathered the organized movement against kevin mccarthy or the matt gaetz leadership with the caucus. that's awful to mike johnson, and you have trump weighing in which is helpful to mike johnson. he can only lose one vote. the math gets interesting because thomas massey has said he is a no on johnson. if he votes present as opposed to naming another candidate, johnson could lose a couple more. you have to have the majority from members who named a speaker. if somebody votes present, the math gets easier for mike johnson. what is helping mike johnson most of all right now is nobody else has a pathway to get the vo

podcast, and we also have republican strategist susan del percio and form republican congressman david jollysnbc political analysts. david, i want to start with you because my understanding is you have been to these syrian refugee camps in the past. i was at the border very early on in this conflict, 2011, 2012. it seems almost impossible that this war has been going on this whole time. what is your take on what you just heard from the president and your reaction to the events overnight? >> yeah, there are no easy answers. and i think the interesting thing about joe biden's comments, or what was left out, because there is so much left unknown. if hts, indeed, has kroelt. they are considered a terrorist organization. they are not an ally of the united states. and you have iran, in particular, still interested in propping up the assad regime, but you have turkey who has been funding and the biggest backer of hts and these rebels. so, when i say there's no easy answer for the united states, that is something that joe biden appreciates. donald trump, the incoming president, does foreign affairs

joining me now to discuss this are donna edwards of maryland and david jolly of florida. they are both msnbc political activists. donna i want to start with your overarching theme. filling up the ranks of his administration. what do you make of the profile of these people? >> what i see are a group of people who are first and foremost absolutely loyal to donald trump. some of them like marco rubio may have started out as critics and competitors. but have quickly fallen into line. the other common thread that i see among these are almost to a one people who denied the 2020 election was won by joe biden. and who continue to ferment that lie and perception over the last four years. it really is for donald trump those were tests of loyalty and it's what he's commanding in his upcoming administration. and they are not going to be people who have too many other options. and so, serving at the pleasure of the president is what they're going to do. i think they're just going to fall in line with whatever it is that he chooses. >> david, let's hear in on marco raoub rubio for a se

hear to discuss this is connor lam of pennsylvania and david jolly of florida.e you with us. conner, i'll start with you. that second voter receives $900 a month in federal benefits. $171 in food stamps. you know pennsylvania voters better than anyone. why do you think these programs are safe or are they safe in republican hands? >> i think trump has a choice to make that will determine if they are safe. so he made two inconsistent promises in the course of this campaign. he promised struggling average everyday people that he was going to fight for them. and he promised elon musk and all the tech billionaires he would find a way to cut $2 trillion out of the federal budget and you can't do both. math doesn't work. so i can't say trump will definitely cut these programs. maybe he will actually honor the commitment he made to people in places like new castle but if the events of the last week are any indication, looks like musk has a fair amount of sway in this administration. so trump will be in a tough spot putting people in western pennsylvania in a tough spot

. >>> let's bring in david jolly of florida and max rose of new york. congressman jolly, what's your reaction as you're observing everything that's playing out in your old stomping grounds? >> i don't know if it's the evil christmas or groundhog day. you see this with republican politics. there's a lot of dynamics to keep in mind. donald trump presided over the longest government shutdown in u.s. history. he's not scared of that. it was 35 days in 2018 and 2019. he's not worried about a government shutdown. his tell was that he wants the debt ceiling lifted through 2029. this is a president who during his first term added 25% of our entire national debt in the first term of donald trump. he wants the freedom to bust through the debt caps when he's president. that's the dynamics informing this decision. he doesn't care about a shutdown. he wants to spend freely and explode the debt. the other dynamic, the only way the government stays open is for mike johnson to work with democrats. we've seen that three times on ukraine funding, on another government sh
