his name is david jones. david, as always, good to see you. thanks for coming on the show.f all, talk about the debt, because we've got a rather interesting thing going on. we've got in the united states approval to spend more and we've got austerity going on over here. how worried are you? >> very worried. it's really the overamping thing this week. we have the finance ministers to discuss the european sovereign debt situation. i think it's going to be a lot. we've seen the yield on italian bonds has crept up, so, again, the markets viewing this. risks are increasing here. with the euros down a cent just at the start of the week against the us dollar, it really is a major concern. switching to the u.s., of course, they've got to try and get this debt ceiling raised by august 2nd and they're just making no progress. i think there's a feeling in markets that someone needs to bang their heads together, politicians on both sides to try to get this agreed because it seemed unlikely it's going happen. if we did get some sort of default through the u.s. it would send massive wave

let's go to david jones. he joins us live from london. good to see you again, david. how relieved are you over what was said in brussels overnight? >> i think it's very fair. we've seen a good recovery yesterday ahead of the announcement, expecting good news and we have seen those gains held on today. we see for example here in london the ftse is a little bit higher, 0.7% a little higher. the euro built on gains overnight. italian bonds, but i do thinking the risk is that it's maybe just a short-term relief that we're seeing in the markets. we've had so many false stones for this year on the crisis, the last year and a half. let's see where we are in a week's time. today it is undeniable there's much more optimism around financial markets. >> you must have thought nerves of steel, david. >> i think it's incredibly volatile. if you look at what the euro is doing, first thing it was selling off very heavily against the u.s. dollar. it dropped a cent and a half on the dollar. then as expectations built, we saw we were going to get a good result in the evening we saw it r

david jones is with mother jones, and also joined by michelle goldberg. is one of the clear-cut cases where you get points from the public for saying you want to be independent of government, and it turns out you're very much dependent on government, you're borrowing on federally backed money. >> on the one hand i'm not sure that most people will blame anyone for taking advantage of a government program they oppose, right? i think -- >> calling for its destruction? >> i think the point is, in her case, the problem i think is that it's cumulative. it's the time and time again she, while kind of lambasting government, her entire career, her entire financial well-being seems to be based in many ways on suckling from the government teat. it's not that just she has loans backed by fannie and freddie, it's that she's also getting subsidies for her farm, her husband is getting medicare for her christian counseling service. she came from the i.r.s. she's had a career and an economic life that's really been based on government. she refuses to admit that helped her
