keller, abc 7 news. >>> it's expensive all over the bay area. there are big differences in teachers salaries around the area. david louie has that part of our coverage from san jose. >> teachers have been wearing red on fridays to show solidarity with striking teachers in oakland. these are photos from the san jose teachers association facebook page. they've had to strike twice in the 1980s. it describes the relationship with the san jose unified school district. >> we're a partnership. >> as a result of past negotiations, the teachers association has access to the district's books and more. >> assigned a predetermined percentage of the district's unrestricted ongoing revenue to teacher salaries an benefits. >> those of that was groundbreaking. >> it was the first of its kind in california. >> that number is 38% for the district's 1200 teachers. compared to oakland teachers, starting pay is almost $8500 higher. $16,000 higher for average pay. over 13,000 higher at the top pay scale. because of how the state sets formulas for school district revenue. teachers are paid significantly less than a neighboring district.
