diane swonk, chief economist at mesirow financial, and david kelly, chief market strategist at j.p. morgan funds. diane, david, nice to have you with us, and lots to talk about. so let's just get going. diane, i'll begin with you. we've seen month of economic reports showing the u.s. economy is getting better. based on what the feds said today is it saying it's having its doubts? >> certainly the fed marked down its forecast from last november which was already weak. and i think what we're seeing is what we've seen many times, instead of henling in the other direction, in 2010 we thought the economy was reaccelerating and then we lost momentum at the beginning of 2011. similar experience at the end of 2011, we finally saw a blip in growth and there's a fear that we'll lose momentum again as we move into 2012, and that's exactly what we are seeing out there. >> susie: david, last night president obama says that the economy is getting stronger, and today chairman bernanke said that it's too soon to say that we're in a stronger new phase. what's your take on all this? >> well, i actuall

good evening, david. >> hi, kate. >> so no candidate as kelly just said seems to have this nailed down. why not? >> well, i think that some of the voters that she spoke to actually addressed this. there is a lack of intensity for any particular candidate in iowa that we've seen in all the polling over the past many weeks. there's certainly intensity in the republican party to beat president obama, and i think it's interesting. one of the candidates who's doing pretty well right now, rick santorum in the final stretch, pennsylvania senator, former senator, is actually on the air with an advertisement saying, hey, i can beat barack obama. i think as governor romney does better, even in this state, it's because folks are looking at him and saying, can he beat barack obama? he may not be the conservative we necessarily like or that we can get excited about, but he may have the best shot to win. i still think that that's animating a lot of voters. even more conservative voters who want the true conservative in the race. >> ron paul took the weekend off. but he has a lot of support in that s

richard kelly head of european rates and research. david owen is still with us. i want to talk portugal, your reaction to the uk if we may, and that collapse this fallen consumer credit. >> i mean, certainly it underpins the fact we need additional qe coming in february. you are still seeing the lag effects and though the economy barely contracted in the fourth quarter and might be marginally better, we're still not growing and there's still not a lot of credit flowing around the system. >> david, one wonders whether the ecb should reverse positions and whether the ecb should have quantitative easing. >> well, that's an interesting point and perhaps also could be buying the paper as well but the point here is that contraction at a fast rate. obviously one of the reasons the quantitative easing was to ensure the balance sheet didn't contract too much so i think this will be of concern to them. i have to say going around meeting investors most people do expect there to be additional qe announced next thursday so the risk they wouldn't do it but on the back of these
