the "wall street journal" this morning are some of the players in this issue including david samson, bridget kelly, david wildstein and bill baroni. how close is he to these four? >> guest: um, let's see. starting with the closest, i guess, would be david samson, who is the chairman of the port authority of new york and new jersey. mr. samson is a former state attorney general under governor mcgreevey at the start of mcgreevey's term in 2002 and '3. david samson was the counsel, the governor's first election campaign, was the chairman of his transition committee when he was transitioning into office. so of those four, he's closest with samson. he went to high school with david wildstein. they weren't in the same class, and i know it appeared they were necessarily close, but part of what, i guess, part of wildstein's interesting connection to this whole thing is that he had been anonymously the editor of a political web site here in new jersey for years. he ran under a pen name, ran columns. a lot of the sort of stories of the things that christie was accomplishing as u.s. attorney and his focus on

and hear the accounts from bridget kelly, david stepien and bills wou bill. >> i want to bring up a recent pew poll that came out just four days after the scandal. but it gave you a sense of how people were affected, at least in the beginning stages. it shows 60%, really, their opinion did not change of governor chris christie. it made me wonder two things, either they just don't care. or this sort of behavior is essentially expected from the governor of new jersey. how do you read that? >> well, i don't think the impacts that we'll see on public opinion nationally are the importants ones that we'll see today. what will happen this will be on the image of chris christie. in a general election and more importantly in a presidential primary will use to try to define him. part of the reason why the scandal is damaging is because it's so simple. everybody can relate to being stuck in a traffic jam so it will be easy to tell a story about why this scandal was and why it says a negative thing about chris christie or his leadership. i wouldn't look too closely at the pew poll today but i do think

there's no governmental reason for bridge et kelly to send an e-mail to david wildstein saying there's time for traffic. there's no governmental reason for there to be an e-mail mocking the children being late for school. this clearly was a political operation using governmental resources. and it was done to exact retribution against mayor of fort lee for what purpose we don't know, for not endorsing the governor, for not getting involved otherwise with the govern governor? but there's no valid reason for this to have happened. there's no record, and we've seen thousands of pages of document, there's no records that would suggest that there was a valid government reason. we see lots of communications about political retribution. we see lots of communication mocking the consequences of what this operation did. and we see lots of communications in a desperate attempt to try to justify what happened. and so, you know, whatever the origins of the investigation, the facts speak for themselves. the governor's people got caught red-handed doing something they shouldn't do, inflicting retribut

the names, kevin o'dowd, david samson, bridget anne kelly, charlie mcken that, the governor's council, the incoming chief of staff, the press secretary, bill beroni, patrick foye who is the kind of truth teller in the middle of this story at the port authority. people remember he's the one who wrote the memo when he discovered this saying it was outrageous and looked like it was a violation of law. this list that we're seeing looks like the basic first stage that you would go to, especially most of these names appearing on the e-mails that we've seen. and authoring most of the e-mails that we've seen. >> absolutely. you know, i've talked extensively with assemblyman wisniewski that's doing their investigation. and also senator weinberg who's chairing the senate committee. and both of them have indicated to me that there's going to be sort of a round one here. none of them would rule out that this could eventually go up to the governor, but they're kind of not running straight to that door. and they're hitting this round of people first. >> everyone knows in a normal evolution of an in

individuals we know that were responsible, at least based on the e-mails and texts like david wildstein and bridget anne kellyyou say governor christie is also a defendant because he knew or reasonably should have known that they were conspireing and orchestrating a political agenda. what do you think, rosemarie? >> fair enough. jake, he's admitted that. he went on tv yesterday and he apologized and he said, these are the people that i was in charge of and this was on my watch and they were stupid. i think he called them malicious. he's admitted that this was his doing and that he didn't properly soupervise his administration. >> joy, there are skeptics out there watching who are saying, oh, gosh, another lawsuit based on nothing. what's your message to them? >> this was a disaster. there are tens and thousands of people who lost man time, who missed their air flights, who missed their doctor's appointments, children who were late for school. scores of people who were going into the city to do that day and into ft. lee that they were unable to do. tens and thousands of man-hours. tens and millions of dollars

the question is who of any of the names david wildstein or bridgett kelly or one of the reports christie is reported to having chief of staff o'dowd will provide faithful information under oath. the threat is clear. it takes one hole in his defense to sink his ship. howard fine is msnbc political analyst. richard, with your advice ewe put together a set of conditions that could be a problem. here is the treacherous path. he needs to hope that no more incriminating documents surface which may seem like a long shot if you consider how free wheeling some aides communicate. second, that no one in the inner circle decides to pin some of the blame on him in exchange with with prosecutors for immunity. everybody that provides testimony concludes christie wasn't involved at all. and fifth, no other leads turn up which give prosecutors an excuse to broaden investigation. based on others brewing including the claims those odds don't seem promising. richard, expand on that in terms of the exposure in which the governor now sits. >> there are a number of potential pit falls have you have summarized

choice to me is that on, i think it's five or six of these subpoenas, including bridget ann kelly and including davidldstein, but also including, i believe, the governor's campaign manager and a few other people, you're asking for not just documents, but you're asking them to hand over their cell phones. any cell phone or blackberry or ipad or any device like that that they have used since september 2012. why those people and why that big a request? >> the request is not that big, but the information is very important. the information contained in those pdas, cell phones. we want to make sure it's preserved. we want to make sure the committee has an opportunity to analyze it, understand whether there were phone calls, text messages, e-mails, p.i.n.s, or any other means of communication. that's one way to preserve that information, by sending this subpoena out and we putting them on notice that we would like to look at it. again, we may look at this stuff and find it's of absolutely no use, but we won't know that until we have an opportunity to look at it. >> why did you pick september 2012? >> we wan

bridget kelly, david samson and others who christie contends all went rogue are bringing in expensive fire-breathing defense attorneys, meanwhile. it's pretty clear they're not going to roll over. their boss is going on the offensive, publicly calling them liars generally, and her, kelly particularly, bridget kelly a liar. it's now their turn to fire back. now governor christie may be completely innocent, of course. but for that to make it in court, no one on his staff can testify he said anything that resembled an order on this matter of the bridge closing, that he talked to any of them about the bridge matter, that he talked to the lieutenant governor about squeezing hoboken mayor dawn zimmer to support a real estate deal, that he knew what they did, the planning and execution of that bogus traffic study. in other words, the guy that spent his entire career looking for opportunities was in this case suddenly and repeatedly out to lunch. that's what it has to look like in court. congressman frank pallone and bill pascrell are both democrats from new jersey. let me start with congress
