david kelly, is still with us.s to me the risk is pretty low for the fed to hold these rates unchanged, which is we know, what they did. what is the risk of cutting, potentially, too early? is a bigger risk a chance of reigniting inflation? >> no, i don't think that the fed will reignite inflation by cutting rates at all. there is a lot of talk about the neutral rate of interest, but the truth is, interest rates have much more of an impact on inancial markets in the real economy. all of the tightening blaster didn't do anything to slow down the economy but what i'm interested to hear from fed chair powell, i would like to hear why they pushed out their estimate on growth this year, because it does seem like they are looking for a lot of employment growth powering this in an economy where the growth of the nativeborn population is pretty slow. is there an immigration component to this? are they thinking they will allow immigrants coming in, in a chaotic fashion, adding to the labor force? is that why they think this

david kelly over the weekend, read that interview. does that echo how you feel about politics?to divorce politics from your market views and how easy is that to do? >> to a certain extent you do. markets have done well regardless of which party is in control. when you think about it, elections are about policy, but you don't know what the policies will be until you know who wins the presidency, the senate and the house and most of the time that's not a single party. this is a consistent tactical trend is ever since world war ii when the incumbent president is running for reelection it's tends to be a very positive year in the markets so if we think about this year we have incumbent president running for reelection and what do we see? we see a lot of positives for the market, the inflation reduction act, the chips act coming into the economy right now being bent. congress is talking about a fiscal bill right now so what you see in every election since world war ii when the incumbent is running for president whether they win or tends to be a good year in the equity market and twi

joining me is jpmorgan asset management chief strategist david kelly. great to see you. as we head into the st. patrick's day weekend, is luck finally running out for the markets? or is this a temporary breather as we went to the fed meeting next week? >> it is a tricky time for markets. there is a risk. we've seen somewhat higher-than-expected readings. the risk, the summer of economic projections, we can only take 19 members of the committee, the supply forecast, only four of them have to change their minds from three rate cuts this year to four rate cuts. that is scaring markets a little bit, the fed might back off of its timetable but if you zoom out of this, the story is really good. what we've got is an economy that remains strong, they gradually come down slowly. if you take cookies out of the oven and are cooling, not as quickly as we want. that is what is going on. it is cooling down but not as fast as investors want and that caused a little bit of nervousness. ashley: are i am thinking about now is cookies. you say bar some sort of shock, environment or geopoli

joining us, as he often does, david kelly. n bellows of western asset. meantime, are we going to go to steve? no, we are going to wait and go to steve in just a moment. david, let me ask you, your base case scenario for what the fed will do and say. >> i don't think they will change their characterization of the economy in any significant way at all in the text, but there is a risk that they reduce their estimate for rate cuts this year from three- way cuts to two rate cuts. it would only take two members of the open market committee to change their mind to do that, so that's one issue. in the long run, they say the federal funds need to be 2.5%. that is the equilibrium number could that seems low to a lot of economists and strategists. i think everyone will be focused on the summary of economic projections today, rather than what the fed says in its statement in a few minutes. >> kristen, do you agree with david? >> i absolutely agree with him but i would add two things. i think it's interesting that going into this announceme
