for those of you that i have not met last week i'm assistant chief david lazar. i oversee operations where so excited to have you. assistant chief walsh and i were sitting in this class together about 33 years ago so it's been a while for us but we know what it's like to be here on day one. i also know that it was a very challenging morning for you and as the mayor has said, congratulations for making the decision to join the best police department in the country. >> i hope you're all here for one reason and that reason is to help people to help san franciscans, our merchants, our visitors, our residents and everyone that comes and enjoys our city. and we need you for me in operation and i oversee about 80% of the department i oversee all patrol all the investigators special operations in the air force so every day it's city it's the demand of needing more police officers to walk the beaches and to engage in and meet the community. and so we want you to get through this academy. it's challenging. it's nine months. september 11th is your graduation. and so i just
