david lee? >> reporter: jamie, nearly one week after irene first slammed into the east coast, some flood waters have noticeably receded. new aerial video shows a dramatic improvement in patterson, new jersey, where president obama is slated to visit sunday. the swollen river is dropping about two feet a day. sometime this weekend it is expected to drop below flood stage. meanwhile, hundreds of roads in vermont remain closed because of the storm. some 100 members of the maine national guard are being sent to assist in the road repairs. the new hampshire and illinois national guards are also helping out there. the state has called in 1,000 private contractors and consultants to assist in the ongoing cleanup. and in new york state governor andrew cuomo says private insurance companies will be the main source of funding for the one, b with a billion dollars in damages statewide. cuomo is asking new yorkers to volunteer during the labor day holiday to clean up the mess in hard-hit upstate communities

david lee miller has the very latest live this new york city. david?> reporter: megyn, authorities say the threat is credible and specific, but so far they have not been able to get another source to back it up. publicly, the authorities are not discussing the details of the alleged plot, but a joint intelligence bulletin from the fbi and the department of homeland security does spell out the concern of authorities. the bulletin, as you mentioned, warns that a possible car bomb -- it might be similar to the failed car bomb that faisal shahzad trying tried to detonatt year in times square. they can pick their own targets and methods, and that's when we could see the use of small arms, poisons or even homemade explosives. as for the timing of the attack, a published report says five days after usama bin laden was killed, the soldiers of allah vowed to avenge his death, and they specifically cited the tenth anniversary of 9/11. meanwhile, now on the streets of the capital and here in new york city security has been beefed up. new york city's police commis

bill: let's start with david lee miller live in new york city reporting on this. david, good morning. what do we know factually about what is said to be in this possible plot? >> reporter: well, on the record, authorities are not releasing a great deal of specific information. last night at 10:45, the mayor, police commissioner and assistant director of the fbi field office here in new york held a news conference, their words were chosen very carefully, they did not mention specifics, but they did explain why this threat is getting so much attention. listen: >> this this particular instance, we are in receipt of information that we believe is specific, is credible, and as of tonight, is not yet corroborated, and which will in the hours and days ahead consume our resources to make sure we fully understand the threat and take every step if in fact it becomes corroborated to mitigate it. >> reporter: here is some of what the authorities are not saying. they are reportedly looking for three men who entered the united states from pakistan, with orders to detonate a car

david lee miller live in patterson, new jersey today, david lee. >> reporter: you and i talked yesterday, and the waters at that time were receding, and they continue to do so, but just to under score just how serious the threat of flooding is here, take a look over my shoulder, even now as the waters recede this is a bridge, water is still pouring over it here on the passack river. there are eleven bridges that dived path certificate son in half. all but one of them we're told is passable. there is still a significant amount of flooding, this as the water continues to recede. the mayor of patterson, new jersey, who i spoke to a short time ago, told me that, yes, he is very pleased that press is going to be coming here on sunday. there is great hope that by then all the floodwater will be gone. i asked the mayor why patterso patterson's so many different locations had been flooded. he said he didn't know why this city was selected but he said he was very pleased that the president was in fact coming here. meanwhile here in new jersey there are still thousands and thousands of people who

gregg: david lee miller, thanks. jenna?enna: a desperate search is going on right now off the coast of honolulu. patti ann brown is live with the latest on this story. >> reporter: jenna, matt curly has been missing for four days now, and is searchers are getting desperate. curly is a doctor in new york city. he was vacationing with his family in hawaii when he vanished while scuba dyeing monday. he was on an education cushion with a driving company for tourists. they were off the south shore of oahu. somehow curly got separated from his island divers group. later, one of his fins was found. curly is a certified, trained diver. the u.s. coast guard called off its search tuesday night. a coast guard spokesman saying they searched an area more than 900 square miles using two ships, a plane and a helicopter. the spokesman says when they suspend a search, they consider how long the person's in the water, the weather and the likelihood of survival. well, the honolulu fire department has continued its efforts to find him along wi

reporter david lee miller is in patterson, new jersey, where president obama is expected to tour somethe worst damage. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning. patterson is the third largest city in the state of new jersey. this is a city still reeling from the massive flooding from the river behind me. we're going to pan uptreatment, and let you see for yourselves what is happening here. the current here still overtaking this bridge that crosses the passic river, this is now a city that is largely divided. some 11 bridges that cross in the city of patterson. we're told all but one of them now is impassable. as we continue to pan, there is some good news. you can see off in the distance, a chicken restaurant and you'll see this chicken restaurant has a for sale sign. we've been keeping our eyes on this seen. just yesterday, we couldn't even read the phone number on it. now, clearly the waters have started to recede. as have all the rivers in the state of new jersey. still, there's an awful, awful, awful amount of water that is here. we'll pan more to the right. you can see here

david lee miller is joining us live in your new york city newsroom.hat we're adding things up here, what's the latest assessment of how much damage there was? >> as the water continues to recede we're learning a great deal more and the damage appears to be more far extensive than many first thought. in one county in new jersey, some set county, northern new jersey, home to 300,000 people, at least 3300 homes we're learning were damaged, martha. the good news, in many instances the water did not rise above the basement, the office of emergency management is still receiving reports across the state about the damage in places like paterson, where president obama is going to visit on sunday. meanwhile, all across the northeast, people continue to realize their lives are not going to be the same any time soon. take a look at some very compelling pictures we have that show 14 miles of the port ver -- jervis train line, twisted like a pretzel by the storm, one official with metro north which runs the line says he's never seen anything like it, it is going to

. >> cbs news hurricane consultant david bernard in miami is tracking lee and watching everything else that is churning in the atlantic. let's begin with lee. what is the latest? >> reporter: well, lee is going to be a big problem the next two or three days it is still located over the southern united states but it will merge with this cold front and move to the northeast. that means a tremendous flood threat in the appalachans and also potentially the mid-atlantic and northeast. that yellow area is 2 to 5 inches of rain, the orange areas could mean as much as five to eight inches of rain. so obviously after irene, real concern about flooding in these areas. >> mitchell: certainly not good news. now to the atlantic and katia. earlier you told me that katia is getting stronger but at this point do you have any better idea to where she is heading. >> reporter: definitely made a comeback. we are calling this the katia comeback this afternoon with 105-mile-per-hour winds. it looks like it might briefly become a category 3 storm this week and pass near and to the south and west of bermuda.

[applause] >> good morning, everyone. about one year and a half ago, supervisor david chiu and malia cohen, along with former supervisor sophie maxwell, and the police department, commissioners, including commissioner joe marsh, we met with various members of the community. particularly, district 11 and district 10, talking about violence on our sambar . the community, including a number of resident groups, had appealed to us to come up with some better ideas on how to keep the community safe. being the public safety was the number one concern among everyone, particularly during the very tense situation that occurred a year and a half ago, and as we deliberated within the city administrator's office, we concluded community policing had to take an additional improvement, if you will, by embracing what the community wanted to see. particularly on the muni lines, in areas where there might be isolation that occurred in those areas, subject to activities that would end up being -- resulting in violence. after several months of meeting with this idea, we met with members of the community that said, if you hired from our area and i
