abc7 news reporter david lui joins us from the site of tuesday's shooting. david? >> reporter: relatively new organization that was mobilized recently for council election is sponsoring this evening's vigil where officer johnson was killed tuesday evening. they're trying to show their support for the officer, but they're also reminding of the sacrifices officers make every day. the san jose exchange club each year honors officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty. the group added a moment of silence to recognize officer michael johnson. >> they get up every morning and put the uniform on and they do their patrols knowing that at any time it could be over for them. >> the san jose mayor and police chief were on hand. the chief has been spending time with the johnson family helping them deal with the grief and seek their wishes for next thursday's memorial service. >> horrific event for law enforcement and for them. so it's a -- it's a loss that you can't really understand. we're helping them get through it best with can consider. >> reporter: the departme

david lui was on hand and he joins us now. >> reporter: this is a great story. his name is arley and has worked in this costco in san ramon for nearly 22 years. but the outlook is cloudy as to how many more years he can do it because of the cancer spreading through his body. >> how are you? i hope you feel better. >> reporter: arley smith is always showing empathy if a customer walks in complaining about a gold. but the tables were turned on him today. some shoppers at the san ramon costco knew arley is the one who needs a smile and some cheer. cancer was discovered in one of his kidneys. the cancer has spread to his bones. so a group calling themselves arley's angels surprised him today after organizing online. >> we know what we need to do, raise some money. $5, $10 $100, whatever you can do. >> reporter: inside a gift basket was money for a bech getaway for arley and his wife. contributions topped $2,500. >> all these people who he has reached out to, now they're there for him. i can't believe how many sweet, wonderful people there are. >> i'm richer than bil
