first, those defense cuts with david martin. >> reporter: of the 800,000 civilians who work for the department of defense, an estimated 700,000 would be furloughed for one day a week. according to the pentagon's chief budget officer robert hale, that would save between $4 and $5 billion. but it would all come out of people's paychecks. >> we feel we don't have any choice but to impose furloughs even though we would much prefer not to do it. frankly, this is within of the least -- the most distasteful tasks i have faced in my four years in this job. >> reporter: department of defense civilians run training range where navy pilots practice strafing runs. they manage the flow of supplies to troops in afghanistan, overhaul army tanks and provide medical care for everybody from wounded warriors to retirees. laying them off for one day a week would not cripple national defense, but it would, said jessica wright the pentagon's head of personnel, be an economic catastrophe for their families. >> if furloughs are enacted, civilians will experience a 20% decrease in their pay between late april and sept

in washington lingo, those budget cuts are called sequestration and david martin has discovered that sequestration is already cutting into national defense. >> reporter: late this afternoon, the 5,000 crew members of the aircraft carrier "truman" got the word: they will not be leaving their home port of norfolk, virginia, for the persian gulf this friday as planned. their deployment is being postponed due to the looming budget crisis. vice admiral mark fox says that means the u.s. will have only one instead of the normal two aircraft carriers in the persian gulf. what does that mean operationally? >> what it does change is the opportunity to have additional capability immediately. there will be additional time distance associated with bringing another vessel over if that's required. >> reporter: do you know how much you're saving by doing this? >> in the hundreds of millions of dollars. >> reporter: the postponement of the "truman's" deployment along with that of a guided missile cruiser is the most visible of the budget cuts known as sequestration. come bounded by the answer sense o

david martin got a look at one of these today a new stellth aircraft for the navy. >> reporter: it looks like a stellth bomber and can carry 4,000 pounds of weapons. but there's no pilot in the cockpit. navy captain jame engdahl is director of what is called the x47-b project. >> it is an autonomous vehicle so it's flying itself. >> reporter: it looks an awful lot like a stellth bomber. >> it's a very unique aircraft. >> reporter: this after responding to a computer program, the x47-b launched from a land-based catapult from a navy test facility in maryland. so how did that test go? >> the test went very well. and it's very significant because this is the first time that we're actually doing catapult shots with a vehicle with nobody in the cockpit. >> reporter: the x47-b has already performed tests abard the uss truman and will attempt its first unmanned takeoff and landing from an aircraft carrier. >> we're working the carrier schedules right now so some time this spring or summer. >> reporter: this time this spring or summer it will take off and land on a carrier. >> that's correct. >>
