now to our national security correspondent, david martin at the pentagon. david, what do we know and not know? >> well, the pentagon officials are confident that a missile shot the plane down. what they don't know is what kind of missile where it was fired from and who fired it. >> pelley: david, what is the evidence it was, in fact, a missile? >> reporter: well there's evidence of a mid-air explosion simply because the debris was scattered over a large area. but on top of that, u.s. intelligence was able to detect the missile in flight and also a radar that was tracking the airliner and you add those three together and it comes up with a pretty convincing case that this was a shootdown. >> pelley: there is evidence, as you understand it, of a missile in flight? >> reporter: right indications of the track of the missile as it went up toward the airliner. >> pelley: why are the ukrainian rebels, the ones supported by russia the most likely suspects in this? >> reporter: well, i think everybody assumes, at least for now, that no one had a credible motive to sh

david martin has more from the pentagon. >> reporter: a video taken on friday shows what the u.s. says could well be the sa-11 missile launcher that shout down the airline. it adds up to an overwhelming circumstantial case implicating russia. >> there's an enormous amount of evidence, even more than i documented, that points to the involvement of russia in providing these systems. >> an intelligence website said a convoy of 150 vehicles crossed from russia into ukraine last monday. they recorded pro-russian rebels to having the system. at the same time on thursday the airline went down. they detected the launch of an sa-11 missile from rebel-controlled territory. the ukrainian military also has the sa-7, but the assessment says we are confident no ukrainian air defense systems were within range of the crash. that leaves russia as the sole suspect. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. >>> fire crews in washington state are hoping that cooler temperatures and lighter winds today will help them battle wildfire. the biggest fire in north central washington has burned 370 square miles

as david martin reports, they want to know where he's from and how he got on the plane. >> reporter: the body was found during a post-flight inspection of a c-1 journey transport after a journey from africa. a young black male had lodged himself above the landing gear where he could not be seen during normal pre and post flight checks. >> aren't these aircraft supposed to be guarded at all tiemt? >> i think certainly that will be looked at in the investigation, looking for implications on how a young man could get inside the wheel well of an air force aircraft. >> reporter: the flight originated in the african city of senegal, flew east and then north to geneva and italy before returning to its home base in germany. the pentagon says some of the airfields are not up to american standards but that would seem all the more reason to guard the plane while it was on the ground. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. >>> no one was injured when a commuter jet was evacuated in phoenix. the us airways express flight arrived in albuquerque as scheduled. someone smelled smoke in the bathroom. 6

here's david martin. >> reporter: the evidence presented by senior intelligence officials cob sifts in part of these pictures posted on social media. they show an s.a.-11 surface-to-air missile launcher-- also known as as buk-- driving through rebel-controlled areas of ukraine in the days before the shootdown. u.s. intelligence did not take the pictures and cannot independently verify them. but it can confirm the authenticity of phone calls interpreted by european communityian intelligence in which rebels are talking about positioning the sa-11s. the senior intelligence officials say the sa-11 likely came from this base in southwestern russia as part of a build-up of rebel force nozz recent weeks after they suffered sed backs at the hands of the ukrainian military. u.s. intelligence was not aware of sa-11s until the day of the shootdown, when it detected a surface to air missile launch at the same time the airliner disappeared from radar. photos of the records show pitting intelligence officials said was consistent with shap flel from an exploding war head. shortly after a known rebel

says it already has some evidence in hand, and david martin has learned what it is. >> reporter: a fireball picked up by american satellites was the first indication a surface- to-air missile armed with a high explosive warhead had struck the airliner. u.s. surveillance also detected a part of the missile's flight path as it streaked toward the plane, allowing analysts to backtrack from the point of impact to an area on the ground at the border between ukraine and russia, most likely on the ukrainian side of the border, territory held by pro-russian rebels. based on signals the missile system gave off, analysts identified it as likely a russian-made sa-11, a sophisticated system of radars, command posts and launchers. pentagon spokesman admiral john kirby said the rebels probably couldn't have operated it on their own. >> it strains creulity to think it could be used by separatists without some measure of russian support and technical assistance. >> reporter: the assistance could range from training rebel missile crews in russia up to a russian personnel actually conducting a launch that br
