david martin at the pentagon. david, thank you. in syria, the siege of aleppo is becoming mass murder. the syrian dictator's forces are encircling the city, which is partly held by rebels who rose up five years ago. well, today rockets fired by those rebels hit a hospital. three women were killed, among 20 who died in aleppo today. the city was once syria's commercial capital. last week a missile fired by the dictatorship killed 50 people in another hospital. in an important study tonight, it has been reported that medical errors are now the third largest cause of death behind heart disease and cancer. dr. jon lapook has been looking into this. >> reporter: dr. martin makary of john hopkins school of medicine co-authored today's analysis on medical errors. >> we're talking about patients dying from the care they receive rather than the disease or injury for which they seek care. we're talking about things that happen that shouldn't happen in a sound health care system. >> reporter: medical errors include mistakes in diagnosis, inad

universal orlando resort. >> steve kroft: now, david martin on assignment for "60 minutes." >> david it is the largest criminal investigation in the history of the united states army: an aftershock caused by the wars in iraq and afghanistan. running short of soldiers, the army national guard came up with a scheme called the recruiting assistance program which paid a $2,000 bonus to members of the guard who brought in a new recruit. a total of 105,000 soldiers got those bonuses, but some of them scammed the system by claiming to bring in recruits they had never met. 80 soldiers have pled guilty or been convicted, and another 60 remain under indictment. by now, most of the big fish have been caught, including some who raked in more than $100,000 in fraudulent bonuses. but as the investigation grinds on into its fourth year, a backlash has set in. some soldiers claim they did nothing illegal and are being made scapegoats for a recruiting program the army admits was badly mismanaged from the start. master sergeant jerry wilson is one of the 105,000 soldiers who fell under investigation. l
