david martin now on what he's learned. >> reporter: the body of sergeant la david johnson was found nearly a mile away from the ambush site. why he got separated from the other americans and how long he survived remain unclear. pentagon officials say a locater beacon was tracked for several hours, fueling hopes he was alive, and raising the agonizing question of whether he could have been saved if the u.s. military had been able to react faster. the biggest mystery is why the parole had not expected anymore contact in a part of niger where this u.n. map shows 46 attacks took place over the last 20 months. the initial explanation by the pentagon is that the team of special forces advisers had nigerian troops and not had a single enemy contact. the patrol had no armed air cover and the one reconnaissance aircraft flying at the time was over another part of the country. when the parole radioed for help, french mirage jets arrived 30 minutes later, make low-level runs, which scared the attackers away, but by then, three soldiers were dead, two wounded, and one missing. a french helicopter med
