there are now new details of the the accident from two witness who's spoke with david mattingly.s convenience store buying a bottle of iced tea and candy, goodies in preparation for watching the nba all-star game. he would have easily made it back to the condo where he was visiting in time for tipoff. it's possible that trayvon entered the neighborhood here, cutting between these twos buildings off the main road there on his way home. it should have been about a ten-minute walk, and even though it was a little after dark, his family probably wasn't concerned at all. this was generally regarded as a safe neighborhood. a safe place to be after dark. one of the reasons for that safety was 28-year-old george zimmerman, a volunteer neighborhood watch captain. but a recent break-in had people worried. >> someone broke into this one right here in the daytime. >> yes, they just walked in. >> frank taffy believes zimmerman kept him from becoming a victim just a month ago, alerting police to a suspicious person outside his condo. >> what was your perception of him? >> george seemed to be a

first, the breaking news which happened just moments ago in sanford, florida, where david mattingly joins us live. david, sanford city commissioners passed a no-confidence motion in the local police chief. what exactly does that mean? does it mean anything? >> reporter: anderson, this was a no confidence vote. they voted 3-2 in no confidence in the city's police chief bill lee. this is really a nonbinding vote, but it demonstrates to the police chief that he no longer has the support of the city commission here. and what it is saying is that they're now going to be looking into more details. they're not going to make a decision right away. it doesn't mean that the chief is fired. but they are going to be looking into deeply in his handling of this killing of trayvon martin. and the chief has only been in office less than a year now. he does not have the support right now of the current mayor of the city, jeff triplette. i watched the mayor earlier today as he was sitting side by side with leaders of the naacp as people who live here were coming forward telling stories about how for years

i'm david mattingly. thanks for starting your day with us. day it has been looking at the damage left behind by the severe storms. at least 32 people are dead from devastating tornadoes that have crisscrossed the country, but many communities are still searching for survivors and victims. we'll have a report from tennessee in just a moment. it's one of the many communities outside chattanooga that were slammed by the storms. but first we want to check in with our bonnie schneider who's keeping up with the latest watches and warnings. bonnie? >> we have two tornado warnings right now. they're stretching over two states, georgia as well as florida. take a look. the first one is covering a portion of florida and georgia right along the border. let's zoom in and i'll show you where it is. it's really -- we receive a lot of strong storms to the east of tallahassee. let's zoom in. it looks like another one pops up in advance of this one, affecting cities like havana, quincy. right now it's affecting decatur county in southwest georgia. this tornado

our david mattingly is following this story and he's in sanford, florida. david, good to see you.iate it. i know that you had a chance to talk to some witnesses today, one of whom briefly spoke to anderson cooper and i wanted to play a little snippet of that. here he is. >> it was dark, but after the shots, obviously someone -- a man got up. it was kind of like that period of him i can't say i watched him get up but maybe within only a couple of seconds or so, then he was walking towards where i was watching. i could see him a little bit clearer and see that it was an hispanic man and he was, you know, he didn't appear hurt or anything else, he just kind of seemed -- i can't speak for him, but he seemed very worried orb whatever, walked like on the sidewalk at that point with his hand up to his forehead. and then another man came out with a flashlight. >> david, i know you had a chance to talk to that eyewitness as well as others. as you're pulling the story together and the threads, what version of events that happened that night are you coming to the conclusion happened? >> repo

i'm david mattingly. thanks for starting your day with us. this stormy day. back to bonnie schneider in the severe weather center. what's happening now? >> we are still tracking some very intense thunderstorms. a tornado warning that was in effect for southwest georgia has now expired. however, we can see tornado warnings issued for this part of the country throughout the day today. in fact, there is a tornado watch in effect until 2:00 eastern standard time. this encompasses quite a large area. we have panama city, hall hassy, valdosta, stretching into parts of south carolina, as well. the storms right now can produce large hail, damaging winds and frequent lightning strikes. a lot of that rolled through north georgia last night. in advance of it, this yellow box you see here, this is a severe thunderstorm box watch. even though we're getting heavy rain, this could become severe and more intense throughout the day, especially as we get more instability throughout the day especially as we get more heat building in the afternoon. currently, some of the heavies

i want to bring in david mattingly. he's been making calls on this for us today. f reporting on this. you had a very brief conversation with the police chief down there. what did he say? >> reporter: well, brooke, we're hearing today that the police department is ready to come out and have -- talk to the public about what they've been doing over the past couple of weeks. they feel like their investigation has gotten to the point now where they can possibly turn it over to the state's attorney to determine what kind of charges will be filed, if any, in this case. we're waiting to find out later this afternoon what might be the next step here. in the meantime, the chief did talk to cnn late last week, and he was saying that they were listening very intently to the 911 call made by george zimm zimmerman and they were listening to that tape. and on that tape they were able to hear arguing and they were able to hear the gunshot. the chief was saying that there appears to be some evidence supporting the story that zimmerman was saying, that he was acting in self-defense.

. >> david mattingly, my thanks to you. mentioned, there is going to be a press conference at the top of the hour. obviously, that will give us more details on perhaps what happened. really, we have very little information as far as what happened that night to 17-year-old trevon martin when he was shot. i want to bring in ben croft. he is the attorney for the martin family, and mr. croft, my condolences go out to the family. i have to ask at the top here, why do you want these 911 tapes released? >> brooke, we think it's clear if those 911 tapes are made public, we will be able to answer some very important questions. number one, we will know why george zimmerman, this homeowner's association loose cannon, thought trevon martin was suspicious. that's very, very important to tell you where his mentality was. secondly, it will tell us why he just disregarded, just ignored the police instructions when they tell him to stay put, they'll be there in a few minutes. the 911 tapes is going to tell you why he said he's not going to

>> david mattingly, back from sanford, florida.one yet? >> no, in fact, we're told he left his family home there. his father saying he had received some death threats. his father coming to his defense in a letter to the "orlando sentinel" describing him as someone who's hispanic, growing up in a multiracial family. the father went further to say he was not racist and that he believes that his son will be vindicated. >> the family, the parents of trayvon wanted these 911 tapes to be released. they're now calling on the fbi to step forward to take over this case. right now it's in hands of the state attorney general. why the fbi? >> the fbi is being reached out to by not only the family of trayvon martin but also a local congresswoman and the mayor of the city of sanford. they've all reached out to the justice department to get involved. in fact, the police department is welcoming that kind of scrutiny to get involved in this case because they feel pretty confident with the way they've handled this investigation. >> have we heard any

meanwhile, david mattingly standing by for us in georgia. newt gingrich hoping to get back in the win column here tonight. he is the favorite son in georgia, after all. >> reporter: that's right, brooke, and the headline coming out of super tuesday isn't going to be that newt gingrich won georgia. he probably is going to win georgia. this was his home state. this was his district here where i am right now. he is still a very influential republican figure within the party here and among voters. but at this point, the question is by what margin of victory can he win georgia tonight? it's got to be very strong for him to come out of this state and hope to be able to have any life for his campaign after super tuesday. so right now he's looking for a very big win in georgia to take most, possibly all, if he's able to arrange a big turnoutn his favor across the board here in the state of georgia for the 76 delegates that are up for grabs. he's been on the ground here five out of the last seven days campaigning. you know he's going to win here but
