joining me now is sonoma state political science professor david mcewen.nks so much for being with us. >>pleasure to be with you. good afternoon. >>all right. so the last time you saw your students or another class was back in may when the election outlook was very different and i can imagine for most of your students, this is the first time they've even voted in a presidential election. you're back in school now. what are your students saying? does your curriculum change given this sort of historic magnitude of this election >>well, everything changes with this election. we haven't been in a place like this. if you think about young people and what's going on, i study a group called the ray, the rising american electorate. if you start to look at that group more diverse, more urban, their politics are different. they're still concerned for example, about what's going on in their household, financial situation, but they're more likely to have a family member living with them, their have gone to three and a half years of college, maybe haven't completed col

we're joined live this afternoon by david mcewen, chair of the sonoma state's political science department. david, always a pleasure to see you, sir. so as we mentioned, not a lot of time here to make this decision. why walls? how does he help harris's campaign and how does he help expand her appeal? >> i mean, look, greg talked about it on the lead in in terms of those rust belt states. and certainly, brian sobel went represented, you know, how walz has come from places where he's been able to reach across the aisle and flip districts. but but walz has a secret weapon. that secret weapon is he was a teacher and a coach. the best part of my job is reaching students and being with young people and providing an optimism about the world, he provides an optimism, not a pessimism. and that optimism is more than just being an attack dog. it's about providing a view of the world that's prospectively that america's best days are ahead of it. that's really hard, because at the same time, what he also does is he says, look, we made mistakes. like we made mistakes in how we responded to the riots in

we want to talk more now politics and bring in sonoma state political science professor david mcewen with some thoughts. last night david. and then also the run up now to election day. there were some very high expectations heading into the dnc for kamala harris. so did she david, meet the moment? >> look, she had to show that she the stage wasn't too big for her. she did that. democrats came out trying to push the unity and change themes. the unity theme is about going after those swing state voters that tom talked about on the lead in piece. the change component is about being new or different, particularly for 18 to 34 year olds. so if you combine all of that with the test of being genuine and is she genuine or not? and she talks about her anniversary, she talks about her family, she talks about her mother in deeply personal terms. that's all very helpful to keep big mo, to keep the momentum moving. this is going to be a dogfight. there's no question about it. she's polling well. she has changed the race the last four weeks, but she's not exactly to the place where she can overcome

so joining me now, sonoma state political science professor david mcewen.for being here today >live>thank you. nice to join >anne>you. so far at the dnc, kamala harris has actually made appearances herself. she has spoken both nights and that is something we rarely see until the final night of the convention. what do you think the strategy is there? >live>yeah stylistically, she's a different style candidate, right? this isn't 2008 with barack obama. it's certainly not joe biden in 2020 or even hillary clinton in 2016. what the harris team is doing is really giving their own kind of style to this component. they want to build up but they also want to keep her there, kind of bring her in at certain key moments, not for long periods of time. like she's walking out in milwaukee yesterday, as, for example, she's going over the top in the delegate count with gavin newsom. her political cousin, there, making that pledge with the california delegation. so it's carefully choreographed and it has these moments which we see building on tonight. and we've seen some of

us now to talk about all of these political issues is sonoma state political science professor david mcewen. david, good to see you here. we have a lot to talk about, but let's start with the virtual roll call here. obviously, we have seen democratic party leaders. they have clearly over the past week or so unified around vice president harris as the nominee for the party since president biden left the race. but there was some discussion and some criticism of this idea of making her the nominee without a competitive process. do you think democrats should be worried at all about the optics of this virtual roll call that's playing out right now? >> well, what democrats are worried about is not being unified against donald trump. in addition to that, it isn't a coronation. but kamala harris and her team clearly put forth their best effort, rolled out endorsements in the week following joe biden's announcement. but they had been building on this for some time. it's not that this was preplanned or preplanned. it was more that she and her team knew and took steps, if you will, to lock in differen

with 83 days until election day, we welcome back sonoma state political science professor david mcewen. dave, always appreciate the time. let's start with last night's chat on x. mr. trump trying to reclaim some of the spotlight from the harris campaign with a very friendly interview. so how did he do? >> you know what dominates that debate is really the technical difficulties, right. this is where governor desantis announced on twitter spaces back in may of 2023 that he was running for the republican nomination. and that was noteworthy because of the technical difficulties donald trump is looking for a way forward. he and his campaign are looking for a way forward. if you listen to donald trump closely, you see that he believes that the kamala harris and the vice president as the nominee is a creation, a creation that's designed to change the rules on him. that is less about issues and more about him, the person and kamala harris, the person that's not going to win an election. we've seen some changes in the polling. i'm sure we'll talk about that. but when we look at that polling and

for more on this topic, we'll welcome sonoma state political science professor david mcewen to speak six person short list, who do you think vice president harris will choose and why? >> well, one thing to pay attention to is whether she goes with an electoral college kind of electoral vote model. pennsylvania has 19 electoral votes. if you bring pennsylvania, perhaps you bring michigan, perhaps you bring wisconsin. democrats need all three of those states to get to 270. that puts somebody like governor shapiro clearly kind of front and center. if you're going to worry about the sunbelt, what happens there? then you look at somebody like senator mark kelly that opens up potentially that seat. arizona, though, only has 11 electoral votes. tim walz, the governor of minnesota, is someone else to watch. now yesterday, vice president harris had a 90 minute meeting with mayor pete, to me, that sounds like a meeting where. hey, thanks. you're not in the final running. here's what we're going to do in the last 90 days. that's what that kind of meeting seems like to me. the other folks, i thi

pick means for the harris campaign, we're joined now by sonoma state political science professor david mcewenning us. this morning. >> well, good morning. >> so, david, first of all, the thought here was on the harris side was she needed to pick someone from a swing state. yet she chose governor tim walz from minnesota, not a swing state. so what does he add to her ticket. >> all right. so there's a couple elements here. one, even though he's from minnesota, you're talking about ten electoral votes. it does bookend those key battleground states for democrats. if we move to the from west to east, wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania, while governor shapiro of pennsylvania was certainly, right there as a rivalry, one, two with, with waltz and pennsylvania brings 19 electoral votes. the view was that, governor waltz would be someone who could be the attack dog, who could go after the other side. there are going to be some issues with him. he's not well known. for example, in the united states, he is very popular in the state. he's plus 15 in terms of his approval over that of joe biden. that hel
