david mckenzie joins us now. t of all, what are doctors saying about the baby's condition, david? >> well, anderson, it's pretty extraordinary, this child that spent more than two hours in this tiny sewage pipe, as you describe, had to be clawed out of there in eastern china. the doctors saying, miraculously, that the baby's going to be fine, recovering in hospital. and the latest information i have for you is that state media's saying that a person claiming to be the father actually picked up the child and took it home. so, that's a positive development but does leave a lot of unanswered questions still in this incredible tale. anderson? >> so, they allowed the person who says that they're the baby's father to take the baby home. what about the mother? i mean, what is her story? how did she say the baby ended up there? >> well, it might be difficult to believe, but police telling us that they are not going to charge this woman as of yet. they're still investigating, but here's what they say they believe happened,

cnn's david mckenzie is in gin ha -- jinhau, china. >> reporter: this is where the story unfolded on floor of this building. the pictures have gone across the world tarc mother pan ecced, calling police, saying she gave birth after she complained from stomach aches t. child got wedged between a sewage pipe. the images have become famous, hacking at the pipe, trying to get the child out. they brought the pipe onto the street, tried to get him out, this newborn, but it was impossible to reach in and physically pry him out. it was too nar row. so they took the pipe to a neighbor hospital and they pride it opened with pliers, surgeons and the firefighters. they called the child baby 59 after the incubatror it was placed in. apparently the mother took it away, the hospital and police saying it was sufficiently recovered. >> with the assistance from our local police the baby's family came to the hospital and took away the baby t. baby's condition met the rules to be discharged from our hospital. >> reporter: amazing when you consider thee ordeal. >> after she became pregnant, she moved out

david mckenzie joins us from china, where this took place. he joins me now live. on why the mom has not been charged? >> reporter: well, the police are saying that they believe the mother's story, anderson, that this was really just an awful mistake, according to police, even according to neighbors we spoke to in this alleyway near this apartment building where this all unfolded. the neighbors saying this could have been a lot to do with the shame that this mother felt. they say she was pregnant out of wedlock, broke up with her boyfriend around six months ago, she was young, confused, she was hiding that pregnancy from her parents and then when it all unfolded, she didn't quite know what to do. according to police and neighbors, she went to the landlady, they called the police. still unanswered questions, but it seems like this might be a case of a frightened young girl who felt ashamed. >> you are actually at the place where they tried to cut the baby out of the pipe, correct? >> reporter: that's right. and it's pretty extraordinary. this building behind me is w

cnn's david mckenzie joins us now on the phone from china. david, where is this baby this morning?9 doesn't have a name yet. rescued earlier this week. police are telling us that they're not going to charge the mother. they say that this is really just an awful accident. the mother is a young mother. her boyfriend and her broke up six months ago. she felt ashamed. unexpectedly, according to the police and the teenager giving birth and basically panicking, calling the landlord, calling the police that came over and rescued the child. certainly some unanswered questions still but does seem like the child is doing fine, that the mother and the family is asking for privacy and this could have been really terrible accident. >> police calling it an accident. that seems awfully hard to believe, david. that aside, what is the reaction from the chinese public? >> reaction from the public, a lot of soul searching going on about this, the mother, giving sympathy to the mother as well. there's a lot of taboo here about people having children outside of being married. so that definitely seems t

i asked david mckenzie what he's learned about the baby's mother. >> jake, this is the apartment building where the events unfolded that really captured the world's attention. a newborn baby boy stuck in a sewage pipe, had to be rescued by police and firefighters here in china. now it seems now that boy has recovered miraculously. the hospital telling us that he's, in fact, gone home with the mother's parents. the case of the mother, new developments, the police said they won't press charges most likely against her. neighbors in this area say that this could have been a case of a young mother was frightened and ashamed. apparently she had hidden the pregnancy from her parents and she didn't quite know what to do whether she had those stomach pains and realized she was going to give birth. she rushed her landlord in this area and they then called the police. police and the hospital are asking for privacy for the parents and the family. at this stage it seems that this is more case of an ashamed and frightened woman. jake? >> all right. thanks to david. now we go to russia. scientists have
