>> well, and understand apply so, aaron david miller. now that there is a meeting coming up in just 40 minutes of the security cabinet in israel about the potential for a ground offensive, what are the discussions like and what's the role, if any, that the u.s. has in terms of influence. >> as i've said, the israeli experience in lebanon when barak withdrew to recognize blue line, even though there are disputed points was a very, very, very unhappy experience. i don't imagine the israelis are considering a military deployment, either in '78 when they initially went in and set up a security zone, or in '82, when they essentially went to beirut and beyond. i think the objective will be limited, basically to destroy infrastructure aboveground and below ground, and to clear that area of the elite hezbollah military group, assuming they are still there. the real issue here, chris, is how do the israelis tether their brilliant tactical and operational successes over the last ten days with the objective that they say they want, which is a retur

geoff: aaron david miller, what about iran?re saying neither israel or iran wants a full-blown direct conflict but how might this escalation by israel into lebanon prompt iran to be more provocative? aaron: if you got a major escalation, hezbollah has not crossed the redline which is the use of the precision guided missiles, which they have hundreds. they have sufficient quantity in order to do tremendous damage to israeli population centers, infrastructure, the electricity grid. israel gets a lot of its water from desalination plants, those would go up. this could become a major nightmare. hezbollah has the capacity to launch 3000 missiles a day. summer 2006, they launched 3000 during the entire campaign. the iranians want to cause the israelis as much difficulties as they can. they would love to see an israeli occupation of southern lebanon. they would love to see the israelis in the west bank and gaza in perpetuity, but what they don't see is an israeli and/or american strike against iran proper. you could end up with that e

aaron david miller, i'm going to bring you in on this. matt is talking about how this moment feels different than others. what's your sense of things? >> i have been really reluctant and hesitant to make a judgment that we're really headed for what i think we all fear, which is a major escalation between israel and hezbollah, which not only involves an israeli ground up in southern lebanon, but hezbollah's use of its precision guided missiles of which they have around 400. they can launch 3,000 missiles a day. that sort of saturation against israel, even with israel's sophisticated air layer defense, iron dome, david sling and the arrow, you're talking hundreds if not more israeli deaths, the infrastructure grid, and you're talking about an israeli preemption and reaction in lebanon that would kill thousands of lebanese. southern beirut, which has as many as a million people. we haven't gotten the casualty reports yet, the lebanese ministry of health thing was reporting two dead and 78 wounded. that's clearly very preliminary. going after
