david agreed to try. he runs the arch angel ancient tree archive in michigan dedicated to preserving old growth and historic trees. he jumped at the chance to work on a tree that muir had touched. in fact, he'd do it for free. >> there's almost a sacredness for these trees. john muir walked thousands of miles. why did he pick up one tree to bring back and plant it by his home that witnessed his life and times. >> reporter: so much like he does with other park trees, keith climbed the sequoia with a saw and a pair of pruning shears. except instead of cutting out of did parts he sought out the newest part, clipped it and overnighted it to michigan. there it was treated not just with tlc but hormones to stimulate growth. keith just heard that roots have indeed started to grow and john muir's tree will live on, in a way. and even if the current sequoia hangs on for many more years and keith never see it is replaced with a copy, he's happy knowing he played a part not just in preserving history but keeping it alive. >> i do keep a great sense of pride in being able to start the project. maybe my daughter will some day come back to the john muir site and see this tree pl
