here's david muir. >> reporter: august 14th, 1945 the war finally over. world's city marked one tremendous shout of joy and gladness. >> reporter: millions pouring into the streets, celebrating the end of world war ii. there were so many kisses, none like this one. time's square with the most iconic image, that sailor, george mendoza serving aboard the destroyer in the pacific. in 1995, he told us about that day in new york. he was on leave and he was actually getting ready to go back to leave. >> i was at radio city music hall. they were stopping the show and said the war is over. everybody went down into time's square. of course, there was some mob of people and everybody was raising -- and having a good time. >> reporter: the nurse he kissed. greta freedman. why did he pick her? >> she was a nurse, it was the uniform. >> reporter: they stayed in touch through the years, telling each other about their families, his family saying george loved his country and was proud of that photo. >> the picture is still known around the whole world as a symbol of the
