here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: the abilene fire department answering a call.r-old conner. he is obsessed with fire trucks. his dad has been away for a while. u.s. air force captain manny lamson in the middle east for the last six months. on this day the firefighters step in to help. conner has brought cookies to the firehouse, so they brought the truck to him. a fist bump. they lift him into the driver's seat. then the back door -- one more fireman. kneeling down, lifting up his helmet, was conner's dad. with lots of kisses for dad, and conner kept putting his hands to his father's face. it was really him. the fire department writing, welcome home, captain manny lamson. for conner, welcome home, dad. >>> another son in texas is getting heaps of praise this morning over an accomplishment that's enough to make even the smartest among us feel like slackers. >> 17-year-old houston high school senior jeremy bootway has managed to get accepted into 15 different colleges and universities, including all eight ivy league schools. >> what? all eight ivy league schools.

here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: rebel is a rescue dog adopted three years ago.er since. but last week there was a fire in their apartment building in harrisonburg, virginia. the dog was home alone when kayla got the devastating call. >> i was a wreck. very hysterical. that was my first concern was whether or not they were going to be able to get rebel out. >> reporter: firefighters arrived but it was too dangerous to go upstairs to find rebel. >> the k9 unit told my parents there was no way he would have escaped. >> reporter: two days later you could see first responders on the third floor because kayla had returned and thought she heard barking. family and friends watching below. this is the moment firefighters emerged. they were carrying the dog out. down the stairs and right to the parking lot with rebel. and just look at what happens when she sets rebel down. kisses for everyone, tail wagging. rebel beyond happy. the local vet says despite a burn to his nose, rebel is just fine. and this image, rebel and kayla and the firefighters smiling too after going bac
